This museum harkens back to 1799, when sea captains would bring home a "cabinet of natural and artificial curiosities" from strange and exotic lands. Today, it houses one million works, including an 18th-century Chinese merchant's house transported from China and reassembled here.

Experience art and culture from around the world at one of New England’s largest museums. Located in the coastal city of Salem, Massachusetts, the Peabody Essex Museum offers unrivaled collections, special exhibitions, a hands-on education center, an award-winning shop, and a café and restaurant. The museum campus also features numerous parks, period gardens, and daily tours of historic houses, including Yin Yu Tang, an 18th-century Chinese merchant’s house transported from China and reassembled at the Peabody Essex Museum.

The Peabody Essex Museum houses an impressive collection of African, American, Asian, Native American, Oceanic, and Indian art, as well as one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Maritime Art & Artifacts. Also on display is a Photography collection featuring acquisitions from as early as 1840 (the same year photography was invented).
