Miami Seaquarium for Green Family Fun

Green Planet named the Miami Seaquarium one of its "7 Amazing Eco-Oriented Aquariums." They cited the educational nature of many of the programs put on by the Seaquarium as one of the reasons it gets their stamp of approval. The Manatee exhibit came in for special praise, particularly with the Seaquarium's efforts around Manatee rescue and rehabilitation to help preserve these gentle but endangered aquatic creatures. One highlight that is hard to find elsewhere is the Dolphin Interaction program. Participants get to learn about dolphins and then actually enter the water and interact with them. You were probably expecting me to now say how you can't ride them, but in fact a dolphin ride is part of the experience! The Seaquarium is one of 35 area museums, tours, and things to do in Miami that participate in the Go Miami Card program. With the card, holders get into any and all of … [Read more...]

Battleship Missouri Revamped and Ready

Pearl Harbor is famous to visitors the world over as the site of the December 7, 1941 attack that pushed the United States into World War II. Not surprisingly, people most often think of the iconic U.S.S. Arizona memorial when they think of Pearl Harbor. But another Battleship also resides there which represents the end of World War II. The U.S.S. Missouri was the site of the Japanese surrender in 1945 which finally ended the war. The ship sailed right into Tokyo Bay and the surrender proceedings where held on its deck. Some years ago I ask a veteran who had served on the Missouri what his thoughts were as the ship steamed into the Bay that day. "I thought were were going to be blown to Hell for sure," he told me. Thankfully his fears were not realized. And the "Mighty Mo" is now docked not far from where the Arizona rests, and a fitting compliment to any visit to that … [Read more...]

Wondering what to do in Los Angeles?

LA is famous for its sprawl. This reputation is enough to scare visitors away from making a quick trip to the City. But even if you have a reason to stop while flying through LAX or if you can drive into town for a couple nights, Los Angeles can be a surprisingly rewarding place for a short visit. Making plans for a trip to LA can be overwhelming because there are so many options.  If you’re into sightseeing, I recommend the Go Los Angeles Card.  It aggregates 40 top museums, tours and attractions from across the area onto a single ticket. It is priced to save you money compared to buying separate tickets. Buy it for the number of days you need and you only need to see 2 or 3 things to see the savings add up. One popular destinations for visitors to LA is Hollywood.  Here you can take pictures under the Hollywood sign at the Kodak Theatre, take walking tours with Red Line … [Read more...]

Mammoths and Mastodons Take The Field

Illustration by Velizar Simeonovski © The Field Museum Mammoths and Mastodons: Titans of the Ice Age is a special exhibition coming to The Field Museum. Visitors will step back to the time of these fascinating animals with a series of exhibits and interactive opportunities. The highlight is Lyuba, a 42,000 year old baby woolly mammoth. Lyuba made headlines when she was discovered because she is the most complete mammoth ever discovered. You'll learn how she and her kind lived and survived in a world populated with saber-tooth tigers and short-faced bears. Other exhibits include the opportunity to try your hand at cave art, to touch mastodon teeth, and even feel mammoth fur. Mammoths and Mastodons runs from March 5 through September 6, 2010. A Go Chicago Card (or a Chicago Explorer Pass) can be used for admission to the Field Museum -- and let you skip the entry lines. The … [Read more...]
