While none of us are really looking forward to the end of summer, the fun and excitement of Labor Day Weekend can go a long way towards compensating for the return to school and work. From barbecues and picnics to mini vacations, there are plenty of options for how to spend that last, glorious weekend of summer. If you’re going to be in South Beach this Labor Day Weekend, here are a few local events and Miami attractions to check out.
South Beach Bike Week
August 29 – September 1
For the motorcycle fans out there, the second annual happening of this fun event is filled with everything a bike lover could want. There will be bike shows featuring all the coolest new models, contests for the best biker tattoo, plus a series of concerts, a vendor floor, and many other activities – all held in the Biker Village (between 8th and 10th on Ocean Drive). This is held right in the Art Deco district, so you can easily mix in some high culture alongside the popular culture experience.
Miami Marlins Baseball
Series vs the New York Mets
September 1 – 3
Baseball fans won’t want to miss a game at the beautiful Marlins Park in Little Havana. A matchup between these division rivals is sure to be fun for the whole family! Given the relocated NYC population of Southern Florida, expect tickets to sell more than usual and look into purchasing in advance. Try a nearby restaurant for lunch or dinner to get a taste of some of the city’s best authentic cuisine.
“Tinkertoy: Build Your Imagination” at the Miami Children’s Museum
Through September 14
This temporary exhibit is all about the power and potential of these classic toys. By seeing the marvelous shapes that tinkertoys can create through thoughtful planning and teamwork, kids can learn about how the process of experimentation (even with toys!) is all about solving real work problems. There’s also a really cool play area and several activity stations for families to enjoy.
XIX International Ballet Festival
Begins August 30th
An educational and exciting festival that celebrates all things ballet. Over 200 artists representing more than 20 companies will perform and demonstrate work across 6 different venues throughout the month of September, revealing the breadth and variety of modern ballet on a global scene. This festival will also showcase literature, art, and film featuring ballet alongside the live performances to contextualize this timeless dance. It’s a fantastic cultural opportunity for the whole family!
Special Exhibits at Local Art Museums
