New Year’s Eve 2012 in New York City

nyc ball

New York City is one of the top destinations in the world for New Year’s Eve, boasting everything from the symbolic Ball Drop and over 2 tons of confetti to parties that take over entire museums well into the morning. Here’s a look at the different events going on this December 31st:

Times Square & the Ball Drop

Called the world’s biggest New Year’s Eve party, Times Square is historically a hot destination every December 31st. Nearly every New Year’s Eve since 1907, New York City has dropped a time ball down the flagpole atop One Times Square to inaugurate the New Year. This December 31st, Mayor Bloomberg has invited Lady Gaga to push the button that drops the Waterford Crystal ball.

Approximately 1 million people will be in Manhattan’s Times Square this year to celebrate, including Drake, Blake Shelton, LMFAO, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, and Blink 182 as some of this year’s performers. The majority of celebrants arrive in the late afternoon on December 31st, and opening ceremonies start at 6pm. No tickets necessary, as the yearly tradition is completely free!

Fireworks at Grand Army Plaza

Fireworks

If you want to skip the Times Square confetti for some good old fashioned fireworks, head over to Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn to catch a midnight fireworks show. There will also be musical entertainment from Brooklyn’s Rock ‘N’ Soul Experience as well as free hot chocolate. Park owners suggest that the best viewing spots are anywhere in Grand Army Plaza, inside the Park on the West Drive, or along Prospect Park West between Grand Army Plaza and 9th Street. Just like the Ball Drop, this event is free.

The Bryant Park Grill decorated for the holidays

Parks

Located just two blocks from Times Square, Bryant Park is hosting a party at Bryant Park Grill this New Year’s Eve with a six hour premium open bar and a continental breakfast in the morning. The party takes place in three distinct rooms, with DJs spinning Hip Hop, House, Pop/Top 40, and ’80s tunes throughout the night. Bryant Park Grill’s party is exclusive and star-studded, with celebrities like Gwen Stefani and P. Diddy having attended in the past. Tickets start at $150 plus service charges, with discount tickets available for entry after 12:30am at $75 plus service charges each.

Family Friendly

If you’re looking to celebrate in the city with a younger crowd, consider going to Madame Tussauds’ Wax Museum New Year’s Eve party. Although the event includes an open bar and DJ for those who are 21+, the Museum party includes admission into Super Hero, Pop Star Celebrity, and Historical Rooms that are appropriate for all ages. There will also be a 4D Cinema that combines 3D film with snow, wind, and other 4D effects. Tickets start at $125 plus service charges, but there are family packages available starting at $290 plus service charges.
