Due to the stellar weather, summer is probably the best time of the year to visit one of America’s prettiest cities, San Diego. The weather is always great in Southern California, but summer in San Diego certainly takes things up a level (or two). The great weather will only be further complemented by the slate of summertime San Diego Attractions that are coming up in 2014.
One of the San Diego Attractions that will be taking place in early summer is the San Diego Surf Film Festival from May 7 – 10. Although surfing may not have originated in San Diego, surf culture has woven itself into the city’s fabric in a big way and the San Diego Surf Film Festival is simply a celebration of the passion the locals feel for riding the waves. The 2014 SDSFF will feature more than 25 international films, dozens of filmmakers, a surf art gallery, live music and art and “raging after-parties.” Sounds like fun – cowabunga dude!
There are two major San Diego Attractions in June, the Rock and Roll Marathon & Half Marathon and the San Diego County Fair. During the marathon, 26 bands will be placed throughout each mile of the marathon course, so the thousands of runners (or walkers) pounding the pavement can rock out while they race their hearts out – you could too!
Beginning on June 7, North America’s fourth-largest fair will get underway at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. With 1.4 million anticipated visitors, the 2014 San Diego County Fair will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Beatles first visit to the U.S. In addition to tunes by the Fab Four, the fair will also feature its usual assortment of deep-fried food, rides, animals, and a perfect view of the Pacific Ocean from the Ferris Wheel!
Each summer a stage is erected by the bay at Embarcadero Marina Park South to host the San Diego Symphony’s annual outdoor summer concert series. The Ashford University Summer Pops series is 10 weeks of concerts that begin just before the 4th of July and run through Labor Day.
In addition to concerts featuring the San Diego Symphony and conductor Matthew Garbutt, the Summer Pops series also will welcome artists like Boz Scaggs, Nathan Pacheco, Ozomatli and Burt Bacharach in 2014. There will also be tribute shows honoring great acts like Elvis, the Beatles and Ray Charles, so don’t be shy about checking out the schedule while you are trying to figure out what San Diego Attractions you’d like to visit.
For fans of Superman, Spiderman, Spawn and the Simpsons, there’s probably no better San Diego Attraction than the annual Comic-Con International show. Comic-Con International: San Diego is a three-day festival that has quickly become the largest comics and pop culture event in the United States. During Comic-Con San Diego, more than 130,000 artists, celebrities and comic book fans will pack the San DiegoConvention Center – a huge transformation from when about 100 people attended the first “minicon” in 1970. The event also features the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival and the Eisner Awards at off-site locations.
