Fireworks over Oakland Bay Bridge

Everyone’s favorite holiday attraction is the 4th of July Fireworks. For 2014, the San Francisco 4th of July Fireworks will be set off in two locations: from Marina Green and from Fisherman’s Wharf. You’ll be able to see both sets of fireworks from most central locations, and the synched performance is truly an impressive sight. We recommend taking public transit to the area, as surrounding streets will be closed to cars for several hours in advance of the fireworks. (Insider Tip: pick up a Muni Visitor Passport to get the most value out of your public transit rides – it’s well worth it.)

A few good places to set up with a blanket and chairs are Green Meadow Park / Marina Green, Crissy Field, and Aquatic Park. These locations will get very crowded, likely very early in the day, and you’ll want to be stocked on food, water, and sunscreen if you plan to stake out that perfect spot. Remember to arrive early! Even if just want to pop in last minute to watch the fireworks, we don’t recommend arriving any later than 9:00 pm. The fireworks begin around 9:30 (or as soon as it’s dark enough to see them well) and end approximately 30 minutes later.

Golden Gate Bridge

You’ll also be able to see the fireworks from Golden Gate Park, although they will be a bit off north in the distance. More importantly, Golden Gate Park is also an excellent place to enjoy the early part of the day, as it’s home to some top festive San Francisco attractions and events. In addition to a number of beautiful biking and walking trails, you’ll find the world-class de Young Museum, the charming Conservatory of Flowers, and the completely amazing California Academy of Sciences. For the holiday, Golden Gate Park is hosting a Patriotic Music Concert from 1:00 – 2:30 pm at the Music Concourse Bandstand. It’s a great free event to get you in the holiday spirit!

Another place to celebrate the 4th of July in San Francisco is on the waterfront. Pier 39 will feature festive music and family activities all day prior to the evening fireworks. Fisherman’s Wharf and the Embarcadero will also have a number of lively performances, kids activities, and musical events in honor of the holiday. Explore San Francisco’s patriotic heritage with a tour of the SS Jeremiah O’Brien or pick up a San Francisco Bridge Cruise for some quality sightseeing.
