Shark Week at the Shedd Aquarium

Deep in the waters of the earth’s massive oceans, more than 300 species of sharks live in a shroud of mystery and myth. From coral reefs in the Indian Ocean to Caribbean Sea, sharks hunt their prey, scavenge for food, and stealthily roam the waters enjoying their status at the top of the ocean’s natural food chain. However, there’s a lot about sharks that you may not know. According to the experts at the Shedd Aquarium, there are a lot of misconceptions out there surrounding these feared creatures.

That’s why—just in time for the Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week—the Shedd Aquarium is hosting the Shark Week “Shedd-ule” of Events. In fact, the Shedd Aquarium’s events are already underway.

On July 5th, Shedd launched Shark Feeding Tour: Behind the Scenes in Wild Reef. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, embark on a 60-minute guided exploration to discover exactly what mealtime with the sharks is like. After being introduced to the reef residents, including sea stars, rays, and sharks, your expert guide will give you the lowdown on what each animal eats—and how they avoid being eaten. Finally, join the aquarists behind the scenes above the 400,000 gallon shark habitat to witness a “feed.” As you’ll see, each species has been trained by the aquarium experts to come at the call of its own visual and audible dinner bell—ensuring each species gets the food they need to live healthily!

One of the purposes of the Shedd’s Shark Week extravaganza is to debunk the many myths surrounding sharks and make the public known of the incredible true facts about them. For example, did you know:

  • A draughtsboard shark at the Shedd Aquarium.

A draughtsboard shark at the Shedd Aquarium.

you are more likely to be struck by lightning than get attacked by a shark?

  • to breathe, some sharks must swim 24/7 to force water through their gills?
  • 50% of sharks are less than three feet long?
  • not all sharks are vicious?
  • Zebra sharks are not only gentle, but also playful?

If you were unaware of these shark facts, take a visit to the Aquarium during Shark Week (August 10th – 16th) to learn more. You’ll have the opportunity to take the What Kind of Shark are You? interactive quiz, talk to experts and ask any questions you have about the eleven shark species at the Aquarium, or stop by Jazzin’ at the Shedd for live jazz music on Chicago’s lake front and special shark-themed cocktails to delight your senses.
