A Southern California vacation often involves a trip to one or more of the area’s top theme parks. However, summertime in places like Disneyland means lots of crowds and long lines – not to mention the astronomical prices. This summer, enjoy short lines and sweet rides at a theme park that maintains a hometown feel: Knott’s Berry Farm. Plus, with Knott’s Berry Farm discount tickets, the price is unbeatable.
Billed as America’s first theme park, Knott’s Berry Farm boasts a long history of providing quality entertainment and hospitality in Southern California. What started as a highway-side fruit stand known for the creation of the hybrid boysenberry and delicious berry pies in the 1920s evolved into a “summer long county fair” by the 1950s and a theme park to rival the giants by the 1990s. Today, the park continues to grow, and while you can still get a slice of fresh boysenberry pie, you can also enjoy thrill rides and roller coasters.
Another great thing about Knott’s Berry Farm is that it’s truly a park for all ages. Young kids love Camp Snoopy, where you’ll find balloon races and railroad rides accompanied by your favorite Peanuts characters. Meanwhile, the most adventurous will scream their lungs out on the Boomerang, a hair-raising coaster that flips you upside down six times in one minute…then starts all over again backwards.
Here’s a look at what’s happening this summer at the park:
Three New Rides at Camp Snoopy
In celebration of 30 years at Knott’s Berry Farm, Camp Snoopy has been remodeled and decked out with three new attractions for the summer season. Amid the natural beauty of the high sierras, kids will delight in the whimsical entertainment provided by the Linus Launcher, Charlie Brown’s Kite Flyer, and Pig Pen’s Mud Buddies, which gives the youngest members of your family a chance to ride child-sized ATVs.
Special Summer Shows
Knott’s Berry Farm is known for its summer entertainment series, and this year the park is combining classic traditions with all new acts. The beloved ice show, Snoopy…Unleashed, is back in a Broadway-style spectacular featuring a cast of talented ice skaters and one giant Snoopy. Bluegrass bands are also in the mix, including Krazy Kirk and the Hillbillies at Birdcage Theater and The Ghost Town Miners on Spur Stage. For those looking to dance, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings will feature salsa bands at Fiesta Plaza Stage and on Wednesday and Thursday evenings you can dance to pop hits at the Boardwalk Dance Party featuring DJ Howly.
Calico Mine Ride
The grand re-opening of the Calico Mine Ride, Knott’s first major attraction, took place this June after five months of restoration. The ride takes passengers on a journey through the dark tunnels of a working gold mine, passing underground lakes, waterfalls, and mysterious caverns along the way. The new mine, while staying true to the ride’s tradition, has added 50 animatronic characters, refurbished and repainted mine cars, and all-new ride narration and special effects via a high-tech RFID playback system installed in the cars.
While they’re not new, summer weather calls for a mention of Knott’s water rides! On the hottest days, you’ll appreciate the opportunity to get a little wet on the Timber Mountain Log Ride or cruising down the Bigfoot Rapids on a whitewater raft. Both rides are suitable for the family, though the Rapids do have a 46-inch height requirement.
