The genesis of wine tradition has arrived in the High Country of North Carolina. Banner Elk Winery, the first commercial winery built in Avery and Watauga counties, received recognition with Double Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals at the NC State Fairs.
The winery produces excellent wines from locally grown grapes reflecting the unique characteristics of fruit grown in the Appalachian Mountains. With choices including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Seyval Blanc, Banner Elk White, High Country Rose, Banner Elk Red, M. Foch, a Blueberry wine from estate grown blueberries, and ice wines when conditions permit, it is difficult to choose just one favorite.
The Vintner, Dr. Richard Wolfe, provides guidance to local farmers planting vineyards which grow the French-American and American hybrid grapes. These varieties, originally grown in the French Alps, are hearty enough to survive the harsh winters of the High Country. Also located on the property is Blueberry Villa B&B Inn. This unique inn and winery are a perfect choice for a unique and romantic getaway.
