Frequently Asked Questions

How do I activate my pass?

Easy: simply visit your first attraction!

When does my pass expire?

You have 1 year from the purchase date to begin using your pass. Once you activate your pass by visiting your first attraction, your pass is good for 30 days.

Is my pass valid all day?

You bet! Feel free to visit the attractions any time of the day as long as they are open or operating.

Do I need to choose my attractions in advance?

Nope, choose as you go. The pass is good for any combination of the number of attractions you purchased.

What is your refund policy?

You’ll have a full year from the day you purchase your passes to receive a full refund, as long as they are unused. However, the passes are non-refundable once they're activated.

How much will I save?

Compare the price of the pass to the gate prices of the attractions you want to visit to see how much you can save.

Can I visit an attraction more than once?

No. Your pass includes only one visit per attraction.

What is the age cut off for child tickets?

Child passes are for ages 3–12. Most attractions are free for children under 3.

Can I purchase passes on the spur of the moment when I arrive?

Of course! With instant digital delivery, you can purchase and access passes right on your mobile device. Or, visit one of our local purchase locations.

Do I need to make reservations to visit the attractions?

This symbol indicates that an attraction requires reservations.

Some attractions require a credit card to hold a reservation. In these cases, your credit card will not be charged unless you do not show up for your reservation.

What’s the catch?

There’s no catch. Chicago Explorer Pass has a partnership with all of the participating attractions to make your visit to Chicago as memorable as possible and to help you save time and money.

Can I share my pass with a friend or sell it?

No. A Chicago Explorer Pass is non-transferrable and may not be re-sold.

What happens if an attraction is closed or a tour is cancelled due to weather or other problem?

While we do our best to ensure that all attractions are available, events happen that are out of our control. The great thing about a Chicago Explorer Pass is that there are so many attractions to choose from. If an attraction is closed, or cannot be visited for some reason, we know you'll find a fun alternative in your guidebook!

Comments about Smart Destinations Chicago Explorer Pass:

Our family of four used this during our long weekend stay in Chicago recently. We each received five ride tickets at Navy Pier which are good FOREVER, so even if we didn't use them all, we could have saved them until next year. We skipped the line at Shedd Aquarium, and it was hot & busy that day! We also used it for the Shoreline Sightseeing Tour, which even the kids liked! I also took advantage of the included extra & got a free 8x10 photo at American Girl Place w/purchase, which we had already done. Definitely worth it, two adults and my 6 and 8 year old, and we loved these cards!

Comments about Smart Destinations Chicago Explorer Pass:

My husband and I bought this card because we wanted to do three things, but not crammed into a certain number of days on our honeymoon. This was perfect. We were able to do things one day at a time at our leisure and save tons of money as we did. We went to Shedd Aquarium, the Tall Ship Windy, and Navy Pier. We were able to skip the line at Shedd's, get discount tickets to their show Fantasea, and had access to discounted tickets to the 3D show as well. At Navy Pier, we were able to ride the ferris wheel twice, mini-golf twice, and the carousel once without having to wait in line for tickets more than once. On the Tall Ship Windy, our sail was actually cancelled because of inclement weather, but they were VERY gracious and allowed us to come back later in the week for another sail. This card also had discounts for the IMAX theater on Navy Pier (buy one get one half off) and to the Hershey's Store on Michigan Avenue. We took advantage of this card in every way. We will invest in this card again and again. The Explorer Pass was the best for us since we didn't want to be pressured into doing everything in a certain number of days. It was great and hassle-free EVERYWHERE we went.

Saved big bucks for a family of 6!
By Kari Verified Reviewer from St. Louis, MO on
Pros:
Saved big money, Skip some ticket lines
Cons:
Order 2 weeks ahead, Keep away from cell phone
Best Uses:
Quick entry to Shedd, Quick entry to Skydeck
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations Chicago Explorer Pass:

Having read the one bad review on the Explorer Pass, I made sure I thoroughly read through the promo explanations. The card was perfect for a 3-day Chicago weekend, and though it was difficult to choose just 3 attractions (it's hard to do much more than that anyway), we used it for the Skydeck, the Shedd Aquarium and the Tall Ship Windy cruise; it saved us big bucks over standard (basic) admission prices for the 3 attractions we chose for 5 adults and 1 child (do the math for the attractions you choose), PLUS we were able to get express entry to the Skydeck and the Shedd (which had ridiculously long lines outside--we entered in a matter of minutes!). My family sang my praises! A word of warning: do not store these cards near a cell phone. One of ours got de-magnetized, but the attraction, fortunately, took it anyway, since the other 5 cards scanned properly and we were obviously a family unit traveling together. We were very grateful for her magnanimity. By the way, one drawback for the Windy is that you can't make advance reservations with the card (since they have to swipe it); you have to take your chances and arrive 45 min.-1 hr. ahead of time. But even on a busy Sunday, we did get the cruise we wanted. We were very pleased with the card and the cost savings and benefits it provided. Chicago was a blast with the Explorer Card!

Great Savings
By Michele Verified Reviewer from Philadelphia, PA on
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations Chicago Explorer Pass:

This card was great. For the price of the three day pass, we easily could have spent a lot more for the things we did (Boat Tour, Bike Rental, and Sky Deck). I even got a free burger at one of the participating restaurants.

WOULD NEVER BUY AGAIN!!!!!
By Windy city visitor from Wisconsin on
Cons:
Can only use one premier, Did not get our worth, Will never buy again
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations Chicago Explorer Pass:

When I purchased the card online. I read just the top sections. It wasn't until 2 uses of my card that I was made aware that you could only use the card at 1 premier attraction. I was very upset as I believe that the website was very misleading. I will never buy one of these cards again.

Smart Destinations Response: Sorry you felt misled. We try and make it crystal clear how it works, but based on your feedbak we'll see if we can further improve it.
