The Adler Planetarium invites you to explore outer space without leaving Chicago. Follow astronauts into orbit and experience the beauty of starry night skies. Learn about current NASA missions, discover the Milky Way, and investigate what lies beyond in nine exhibitions and multiple theaters!

What does Adler Planetarium have in store for you?

Planet Explorers is Adler Planetarium’s newest permanent exhibition designed for families with young children. Children take the helm in a space adventure—piloting a rocket, living in space on a “shuttle” and exploring the environment of Planet X. The whole family will enjoy hands-on activities and more.

Universe in Your Hands takes you back to when people believed the Earth was the center of the universe. Check out the awesome astrolabes, armillary spheres, and sundials, and then find out about medieval European and Middle Eastern perceptions of the universe.

Galaxy Wall gives you a massive and complete picture of our galaxy, the Milky Way.

Telescopes: Through the Looking Glass demonstrates how we collect data about our universe using the telescope, and features many of the most important telescopes in the world. This hands-on exhibit will give you a newfound respect for these incredible tools.

Our Solar System drives home the point that there is a LOT out there—much more than just our world, sun, moon, and neighbor planets! In fact, there are many unique ‘worlds’, as well as dwarf planets, comets, and asteroids that orbit the sun! This exhibit lets you drive a rover to examine the surface of mars, and shoot projectiles that put the size of planets into perspective.

Shoot for the Moon gives you the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of astronaut Captain James A. Lovell, Jr. as he experimented with liquid-fuel rockets and participated in NASA’s space race. Get up close to the Gemini 12 spacecraft which spent fourteen days in orbit around the Earth. Stop by the Moon Wall to view NASA’s most recent, high-resolution images of the Apollo moon-landing sites.

Adler’s 3-D Universe Theater brings space to you, with your choice of 3-D shows,

  • Great Observatories in 3-D, a tour of humankind’s greatest observatories both current and ancient
  • 3-D Vision: Imaging the Universe, a collection of real space visualizations collected and used by astronomers around the world

Atwood Historic Experience: Get FREE tickets when you visit Adler! Take a tour inside Chicago’s oldest planetarium, the Atwood sphere. Constructed in 1913, this fifteen-foot sphere offers a piece of history and a tour of the dark night sky from Chicago—without the interference of light pollution.

The Adler Planetarium is a great way to experience the universe in all its splendor from the while still on the ground in Chicago. The night sky is beautiful to behold at any time, and this attraction affords you the perfect way to not only see it, but learn its ancient secrets and mysteries.

We loved our visit to Adler Planetarium. It is beautifully located on the waterfront, and has a fantastic gift shop filled with educational toys and activities. The displays we're all well designed and executed, and have sparked my daughter's interest in astronomy and science in general. The lighting and interior were otherworldly and greatly enhanced our experience. The "3D Sun" show was very interesting and informative. I would go back to Adler in a heartbeat!

This has been a great site along the water edge for years. They have ongoing exhibits, and now feature Apollo 13, among others. Take a look at the layout below for the link of how the building has its exhibits. Admission is $10 for basic and $19 for Galaxy viewing (extra entries) and $23 for the full package. Open generally 10-4 daily and in the museum complex by Grant Park area.

We were offered a choice of several of the day's shows to view, and they offer a wide range of options. We could easily have spent more than just one day here -- there was that much to see and do.

Comments about Smart Destinations Adler Planetarium:

I was pleasantly surprised and how great the children's area was here - and not at all crowded. Almost had the place all to ourselves. Everyone had a good time from our 3 year old to our 8 year old. Spent so much time in the kid's area, actually never saw the rest of the place
