Chicago Children's Museum

There are so many ways to play at Chicago Children’s Museum! At CCM, you can dig for dinosaur bones, climb a three-story schooner, construct a skyscraper, damn up a river, tinker with real tools, drive a fire truck, make art to take home and so much more. Located on historic Navy Pier, on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago Children’s Museum is three floors of fun for children (ages 10 and under) and their families!

Chicago Children’s Museum invites kids to splash, build, climb, create, explore and discover in three vibrant floors of interactive exhibits and playful programs. Just be forewarned—they may not want to leave! What can you do at CCM? Here’s a look at just a few of the exhibits that make learning a whole lot of fun!

  • Skyline: Let your kids feel like they are a part of Chicago’s architecture scene, when they design and build a unique structure using wooden struts, real tools and authentic gear. They can take the “Skyscraper Challenge” and record their work!
  • Dinosaur Expedition: When you’re a kid, what’s cooler than dinos? Not much! Explore this re-creation of the Saharan expedition where Chicago paleontologist Paul Sereno uncovered Suchomimus, a new kind of dinosaur. You’ll see a life-size replica, dig for bones in the excavation pit, and compare the claws, teeth and bones to that of a T-Rex!
  • Tinkering Lab:: This ultimate DIY workshop provides the space and resources, and you decide what to do next! Using real tools and materials, kids (and grownups) have the freedom to innovate and explore life outside of those fancy computer and smartphone screens.
  • WaterWays: Make a splash in this squirting, pumping playground where kids can navigate boats through locks and dams, or control the flow of water using pumps and wheels. Raincoats and hand dryers are available!
  • Kraft Artabounds Studio: Revel in the creative process in this real, working art studio staffed by art educators and visiting artists. Paint, print, press, sew, sketch, sculpt and much more in daily workshops designed for all ages and abilities.
  • Play It Safe: Dress in authentic firefighter gear, slide down the pole, drive the truck and put out a “fire.” Practice escaping from the smoke-filled “Get Low and Go” bedroom. This exhibit is too important—and fun—to miss!
  • Treehouse Trails: Camping, climbing, canoeing, fort-building, stew-cooking and fishing…this exhibit is a mini-outdoor adventure especially for ages five and under!
  • Kids Town: Let them develop their “real world” skills as they change a tire, wash the car, drive a bus, and shop in the grocery store. This urban cityscape promotes problem-solving, emerging literacy and creative exploration, especially for ages five and under.

Chicago Children’s Museum welcomes children and families of all backgrounds and abilities. The entire museum is wheelchair accessible, and child- and adult-size wheelchairs are available, free of charge, upon request. CCM also offers a Storybook Guide for children with developmental disabilities and a Therapeutic Play Guide to support children working on therapies during museum visits. Chicago Children’s Museum is a must-visit family destination and a guaranteed great time!

Comments about Smart Destinations Chicago Children's Museum:

We live in the burbs outside Chicago, and our kids love coming here. Our oldest (10) always thinks he is too old, but then gets here and has a fabulous time. This place is all about kids DOING stuff, jumping, playing, building, making art. Bring extra clothes if they like to play in the fun waterway area - our kids always get soaked! My five year old naps in the car on the way home, every time.

Comments about Smart Destinations Chicago Children's Museum:

This attraction is best for kids 10 & under (and that may be pushing it). My son was 9 and had a good time there but there were quite a few exhibits that were on the juvenile side so he didn't participate in them. He really enjoyed the water world area and the structure construction area. It was nice to visit a place where kids can touch things and not worry about damaging anything.

I gave it a 2 stars b/c it says adventrues for kids thourgh age 10 and my dauhgter is 9 years old and there was not one activity that was according to her age, everything there was to do was for kids below 6 years old, there wasnt even a kid over the age of 5 at this place, It took us 5 minutes to walk thorugh the whole thing trying to find somethign that my daughter could do with no luck... so glad we ddint have to pay for it other wise it woudln't of been a waste of money
