This unusual complex served as Wright's private residence and studio for the first 20 years of his career, 1889-1909. Wright used his home as an architectural laboratory, trying out design concepts before sharing them with clients. Here, he raised six children with his first wife, Catherine Tobin, and designed such famous buildings as the Robie House, Larkin Building and Unity Temple.
The area surrounding the Home and Studio contains the world's largest concentration of Wright-designed structures. With 25 of his buildings in the village, as well as a rich selection of restored Prairie School and Victorian homes, Oak Park is a virtual outdoor museum of architectural history. Guided museum tours and self-guided audio neighborhood walks are available.
