Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd Aquarium lies on the shores of Lake Michigan, a gateway to an underwater world unlike anything you've ever experienced. Come eye-to-eye with a piranha (safely!), get moony over the moon jellies and meet the newest family member, a baby beluga named Naya. This watery world includes 32,500 marine animals and 80 different habitats — plus a polar play zone for kids.

Shedd Aquarium has created a special pass available exclusively to Go Select customers! In addition to general admission, this special pass gets you access to multiple exhibits including Waters of the World, Caribbean Reef, Amazon Rising, Wild Reef, the Abbott, Oceanarium and Polar Play Zone, PLUS the Jellies special exhibit!

The Shedd Aquarium lies on the shores of Lake Michigan, serving as a gateway to an underwater world the likes of which you’ve never seen before. Sharks patrol, jellies pulse, and fishes from around the world school together. Shedd Aquarium lets visitors become explorers, with its interactive and awe-inspiring exhibits and stunning resident-creatures. Have you ever head-bobbed with a blue iguana on a desert island? Gotten eye-to-eye with a piranha in the Amazon? Or followed a sea turtle as she cruised through the Caribbean? With more than 32,500 animals from 1,500 species, it's all possible at Shedd.

On your visit, you will get to meet some of the aquarium’s most fascinating creatures. ‘Granddad’, for example, is Shedd’s resident Australian lungfish, known to be the oldest fish in any of the world’s aquariums.

The Shedd Aquarium recently welcomed a new member: a female beluga whale calf named Naya, born to another beluga at the aquarium named Puiji. Each of the animals at the aquarium has a unique story to share with visitors.

Shedd Aquarium will take you away to a watery world that gives amazing insight into the life of our aquatic neighbors. Exhibits include:

  • Waters of the World: 80 habitats, containing creatures from the watery depths of every corner of the world are here: everything from kelp forests to giant octopus! Other residents include mantilla frogs, blue iguanas (residents of Grand Cayman Island), Nile River knifefish, moon jellies, and sea stars.
  • Caribbean Reef: A spectacular 360-degree tour of a reef habitat that lets you behold amazing sea turtles, moray eels, graceful rays, brightly-colored parrotfish, and yes…sharks! Everything one might expect to find (and some that you might not expect) in the beautiful azure seas of the Caribbean thrive in this 90,000 gallon circular habitat!
  • Amazon Rising: It’s not all about saltwater here at Shedd. Did you know that the Amazon is home to one third of the world’s living things? This exhibit will give you a look at the dark underworld of the murky (albeit life-giving) Amazon. Check out crocodiles, anacondas, piranhas, spiders, and rays! There is more here than just the flesh-eaters though-- this exhibit also features information on the region’s plants, animals, and human inhabitants, as well as tetras and turtles!
  • Abbott Oceanarium: A super-cool “dive” into colorful coastal ecosystems, giving you a look into the habitats of beluga whales, Pacific white-sided dolphins, sea otters, and sea lions.
  • Wild Reef: A phenomenal trip into the world’s coral reefs, including a diver’s view of a spectacular Philippines coral reef, through floor-to ceiling windows! Get up close and personal with sharks, eels, and iridescent corals.
  • Polar Play Zone: Kids can don a penguin suit and slip and slide around to their heart’s content in this super-cool play area, which also features hands-on tidal pools.
  • Jellies: For 500 million years, the seemingly simple systems of sea jellies have thrived in the world's oceans. Learn how jellies' bodies are 95% water and their feeding arms can grow up to 8 feet long; how drifting with the current, jellies travel thousands of miles; and how the tiniest jelly could nestle into a contact lens, while the largest couldn't squeeze into a minivan. Enter this mesmerizing world of jellies, where your hosts are these spectacular creatures—some beautiful, some mysterious, but every one of them fascinating.

Enjoy all this and more during your visit into the waters of the world. Strap a mask and flippers onto your imagination and chart a course to Shedd, the World's Aquarium.

Great but some misleading information
By absngl Verified Reviewer from Toledo, OH on
Pros:
Amazing exhibits, Long 'will Call' Line, Loved Oceanarium, Wild Reefs Was Just Great
Cons:
No Jellies Included, Long 'will Call' Line,

Comments about Smart Destinations Shedd Aquarium:

A must see place in Chicago. I bought two Chicago family FunPass and was very happy with it. However, I was told at The Shedds admission counter that GoSelect pass does not include Jellies show, as advertised by smart Destinations on their page. So I had to pay additional 8 dollars (2 x $4) to get admission to see Jellies show. Also, they charge additional 4 dollars each to experience aquatic show and 4D show. So essentially, I ended up paying $12 more (each ticket) to see all three shows excluded in this pass.

There was a huge line we got to bump up the line and bump up the go line to the membership line. There is a lot to do and see here. A lot of aquatic life that I have never seen before. It takes a couple of hours to see everything.

Good to cut the first waiting line. Then we got to the aquatic show and were told to go back to entrance to pay $20 extra! Kids did love the dolphin show, as this is rare in Midwest.

Comments about Smart Destinations Shedd Aquarium:

This place was such a nice place to visit. I visit the MOnterey Bay Aquatruim frequently but Monterey does not have an Amazon jungle river exhibit! The Beluga whale is also precious!!!! Monterey Bay does not have a Beluga, dolphins or the Amzazon exhibit.

Skipping the line at the entrance saved us about a 1 1/2 hour wait!!!! And with the go select card we also skipped the will call line too! That made it worth every penny!!

Comments about Smart Destinations Shedd Aquarium:

Wonderful aquarium and amazing location! But don't waste your time and money to see the aquatic show. What a let down! We almost left during the performance and only stayed by respect to the artists (?) who have to perform this boring show over and over again...

My son and I spent a whole day at the aquarium. We enjoyed the exhibits, the live show and the movies. It was very busy but the lines moved along well. There was a huge variety of species to learn about. My son was completely entertained all day, never complained of boredom!
