Walk aboard the legendary Queen Mary on this Self Guided Ship Tour, and learn about this vessel’s haunted past with the exhilarating Ghosts and Legends Tour! Take a trip back in time to the glory days of one of the most famous ocean liners in history. The Queen Mary was themode of transportation for the elite of western society. 2011 marks the 75th anniversary of the Queen Mary’s maiden voyage and a tour of the deck is as impressive now as it was then.

Construction on the R.M.S. Queen Mary began in 1930 in Scotland, and the ship was, from the beginning, destined to be in a class of its own. The maiden voyage in 1936 brought the Queen Mary to Cherbourg, France. The ship quickly became popular with the rich and famous. Future voyages would see the likes of Fred Astaire and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor on her decks. In 1939, the Queen Mary was drafted into service and used as a troopship during World War II. Given the ship’s camouflaged grey exterior, she earned the nickname of “the Grey Ghost”, and played a vital role in the success of the Allied Forces.

The self-guided audio tour of the Queen Mary lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, and visitors have the opportunity to experience an extra treat- the 30-minute Ghosts & Legends Show! The Ghosts & Legends Show brings you an interactive, special effects display that highlights the ship’s eerie paranormal hotspots, in the capable hands of a tour guide.

The Queen Mary was first said to have been home to paranormal activity after being permanently docked in California. People have reported hearing children crying, seeing wet footprints mysteriously appear when not a drop of water sits in the swimming pool, and seeing women in vintage bathing suits taking a swim when the pool has been closed for more than 30 years. The passengers and crew members and their supposed sightings have been reported and documented, and the staff of the Queen Mary invites you to see for yourself the site of these haunting and spooky legends…is it real, or the imagination at work?

Enjoy your Self Guided Ship Tour aboard the Queen Mary, and let your imagination run wild as you experience the Ghosts and Legends Tour. Your time aboard the Queen Mary will give you a unique and historic perspective of this once-popular mode of transportation, the elegant steam liner.

Not Worth It

Comments about Smart Destinations Queen Mary:

Skip it. It's really nothing great. Recorded "guide". Layout of the tour not real well thought out. In one door, upstairs, across the boat to get headphones, and then back up the stairs, across the boat back to where you started. We went through a hassle when they forgot to give us our tickets when we used our cards. Had to go through everything to see if we put them somewhere then finally went back to the window to find out they were still sitting there after we spent 20 minutes looking for them. THEN the parking fees are crazy! Less than an hour we spent parked and it was $15!? Definitely not worth the $15. Go to the USS Iowa. Better set up. People are friendlier.

Comments about Smart Destinations Queen Mary:

Had a great time! The pass included admission, headset, and a ticket to the show. The headset narration was greatly informative and very thorough, gave us the freedom to do what we wanted. We could walk anywhere on the ship except the front hull, which is where the show takes place. There were also neat shops and an ice cream parlor on the sun deck, good place to take a break. Creepy vibes throughout the ship!
