Description

The City of Santa Monica was founded in 1875 with the vision of becoming the shipping port of Los Angeles and described at its first land auction as 'a western sky of scarlet and gold, braided with sunshine and adorned with the breath of flowers.' At the Santa Monica Historical Society Museum, discover why Santa Monica never became the Port of Los Angeles, but instead a haven enjoyed and recognized by locals and travelers from around the world as 'Paradise by the Sea.' The museum's permanent and temporary exhibits explore the local history from the Native Gabrielino Indians to the First Round the World Flight that took off from Santa Monica to the many pleasure piers along its beautiful mesmerizing coast. Discover Santa Monica's historic treasures and learn how they have evolved and still thrive today such as the Third Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier. Research services and photo reproductions are available with an expansive images archive.

Driving:

From Interstate 10 West (Santa Monica Freeway) take Lincoln Boulevard exit. Turn right onto Lincoln Boulevard at light. Turn right at next intersection onto Colorado. Turn left onto Euclid Street.
