This famous museum houses more than two million works of art from around the world. And while it may take a lifetime to fully appreciate its vast collections; this is one heck of a way to spend an afternoon. Bonus: Your ticket includes same-day admittance to The Cloisters.

It’s New York City’s most-visited attraction and the monarch of American art museums. Housing an astonishing two million works of art and artifacts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art requires ample time to revel in its eclectic and vast exhibitions. Rare collections such as “Guitar Heroes: Legendary Craftsmen from Italy to New York”, “The Emperor’s Private Paradise: Treasure’s from the Forbidden City”, and “Cezanne’s Card Players” rotate to the Museum at intervals, complementing its sufficiently stunning and diverse mainstays. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is truly among the most prestigious institutions in this city, and it would be a shame to leave NYC without paying it a visit.

Address

Public Transportation

By Subway: Take the 4, 5 or 6 train to 86th Street and walk three blocks west to Fifth Avenue. From the West Side take the 1, B or C train to 86th Street, then the M86 crosstown bus across Central Park to Fifth Avenue. By bus, take the M1, M2, M3, or M4.

The Met Museum is housed in a very recognizable main building on Fifth Avenue, and is a comprehensive collection of European, Asian, Near Eastern, African, Egyptian, Greek and Roman art, and the art of Oceania, Australia, and the Americas. Included in those broad categories are such specific artistic and artisan niches as American Decorative Art, Drawings & Prints, Arms & Armor, European Sculpture, (pause to breathe if you happen to be reading this aloud), Modern Art, The Costume Institute, Musical Instruments, The Libraries, Islamic Art, and Photographs.

Needless to say, if there isn’t something at the Met that interests and inspires you, you might not be human. The artistic periods and art are charted on the museum’s “Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History”, giving visitors geographical and chronological context to help them navigate the halls. After you’ve spent sufficient time absorbing the international splendors on display in the galleries, be sure to pay a visit to The Met Store so you can materialize your memories with a lasting print or gift your loved ones with a classy trinket. Children will enjoy the Met’s “Drop in Drawing” program which allows them to get hands-on art experience. Enjoy a meal to suit your budget or a cup of tea at one of the museum’s eight dining establishments, then head home completely exhilarated and inspired by your fulfilling visit to this legendary institution and New York landmark!

Even if you’ve already paid a visit (or several) to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you absolutely have not seen it all. This museum acquires hundreds of new pieces each year, making for a unique experience that will leave you wanting more and more time to explore. (Bonus: included with access to the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a same-day access pass to The Cloisters Museum & Gardens in northern Manhattan!).
