Presented by the MDPL, the Miami Art Deco Walking Tour gives visitors a brief introduction to all of the architectural styles that are on display in the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. Explore Art Deco, marvel at Mediterranean Revival and reflect on Miami Modern. All three of those styles are exemplified by the district’s hotels, restaurants, and other commercial structures. During the 90-minute Miami Art Deco Walking Tour, an experienced guide will take you inside and out of some of the most interesting buildings in the area.
All of the programs that are offered by the MDPL have special appeal to individuals who are interested in art, design, architecture, history and preservation, but they should also appeal to most other people as well. During the tour, you will want to be on the lookout for examples of Art Deco like ziggurat (stepped) rooflines, glass block, decorative sculptural panels, eyebrows, round porthole windows, terrazzo floors, curved edges and corners, elements in groups of three and neon lighting.
If you’d rather take the Miami Art Deco Walking Tour by yourself, the MDPL also offers a self-guided tour that you can take using an iPod and an accompanying map. Although the self-guided tour also takes 90 minutes, you are free to move through the Art Deco District at your own pace. Audio tours are available in English, Spanish, German, and French.
After the tour, be sure to stop at the Art Deco Welcome Center and get some helpful tips about where to stay, where to eat and what to do in Miami Beach. There are tons of brochures and event guides for you to peruse in order to get the most up-to-date information about what is going on in the area.
Arrive at the Art Deco Gift Shop within 20-25 minues of the scheduled tour time and present your pass.
