Jungle Island

Jungle Island is where tigers, pink flamingoes, alligators, and vultures meet. This earth-conscious Miami destination is more than your run-of-the-mill wildlife park, and even gives you the chance to get really close to some pretty dangerous animals. Jungle Island is even home to a liger! Do you know what that is?

Jungle Island is a lush oasis of wildlife nestled within close proximity to the Miami skyline. This ultra-contemporary theme park is home to the world-famous “liger” (the world’s largest cat), rare twin orangutans, and over 300 varieties of beautiful, exotic birds. Since 1936, Jungle Island has been attracting visitors to its quirky exhibits, and to its stunning residents—like the park’s flock of world-famous pink flamingoes (featured on the opening credits of Miami Vice)… the kind of natural entertainment that can only be found in sunny Florida.

Here’s a look at some of the shows you might see at Jungle Island Miami:

Winged Wonders: The Jungle Island aviary oasis houses a bright host of playful (and some dangerous!) birds from the far reaches of the globes. Some will amuse you with their chatter, others with their appetites (watch a six-foot tall Cassowary swallow an apple whole), and still others will…well…ride bicycles across a high-wire. What did you expect?

Tale of the Tiger: This is truly a remarkable opportunity to get up-close with one of the world’s most misunderstood and feared creatures, courtesy of The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (T.I.G.E.R.S.). The caged show takes place in Jungle Island’s Jungle Theater, and features a variety of big cats, including four stunning colors of tigers. Visitors may have the chance to see black panthers, lynx, spotted leopards, cougars and yes…the liger. Of course, where there are big cats, there are cute cubs, so keep your eyes peeled. This show also includes guest appearances by orangutans, chimps, binturongs, gibbons, capuchins and lemurs.

Dr. Wasabi’s Wild Adventures: This show takes place in Jungle Island’s Serpentarium. Join Dr. Wasabi for a safari through the animal kingdom, meeting such exotic creatures as baby Hamdryas baboons, African penguins, alligators, snapping turtles, and baby alpaca.

Those interested in more immersive and up-close animal experiences may opt to try a Jungle Island Animal Interaction (extra charges apply, and advanced booking is recommended) such as the 60-minute Jungle Encounter, Lemur Experience, or VIP Safari Tour.

Another reason to visit Jungle Island? This admirable Miami wildlife park has earned the U.S. EPA’s Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program’s Gold Level designation, showing a conscious commitment to reducing pesticide risk to human health and the environment.

Key West Trip
By Florida Vacationer Verified Reviewer from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, FL on
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations :

There were no reviews of this tip on the smart destinations so I had to go to trip advisor for reviews. I saw many bad reviews of this company on trip advisor. I will say that my trip was very pleasant. I am sure most trips are good for the passengers but most of them do not review and the bad trips get the complaints. That being said it is a bus trip that is four hours each way. The pick up time is early, between 6:30 and 7. I was held up in traffic and the guide and driver were kind enough to wait an extra 15 minutes until we arrived. The tour guide had great information and made the ride pass quickly on our way there. It was a great benefit getting to ride and not worry about driving. We got to stay at Key West for about 6 hours. It is enough time to get a look at the Island and see a few things, but if you are wanting to have a good Key West experience I would recommend stay for a couple days. Note: They do make it VERY CLEAR when they are leaving and they do leave at that time NO EXECPTIONS! Make sure you are at the pickup point on time or you will be left behind. (I did not get left). Overall the trip there and back was enjoyable and my family had a great time.

Good place to visit
By Florida Vacationer Verified Reviewer from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, FL on
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations :

This was a very neat place to see. There are a few neat things to see that you would not see in a normal zoo. If you are going to stay for all the shows it takes about 3 hours to see the entire area. I am not sure I would pay the $37 out of pocket, but with the go card it is a worth while area to stop in and see especially if you have children. I am from St Louis where the zoo is free and much larger but my wife and I did have a good time see the exhibits at Jungle Island.

Cute little park
By caroline Verified Reviewer from St. Louis, Missouri on
Pros:
Cool shows
Cons:
Expensive parking Shuttle limited Take LOTS of bug spray Kind of small park
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations :

It would be best if you could get dropped off because the shuttle was very limited (only one pick up and drop off from Bayside) and the parking was $8. The shows were good though. The park is small so you wouldn't need more than a couple hours to see everything. Bring lots of bug spray because there were mosquitos everywhere.

Comments about Smart Destinations :

This park was very nice. Enjoyed the few shows, timed out well by park allowing enough time in between but still time to wander through exhibits. Check out picture deals upon entering, lots of opportunities to hold animals and get pictures taken. Great exhibits

Great time
By amrmo13 Verified Reviewer from Kansas City, MO on
Pros:
Unique, Animal Interaction
Cons:
Pricey,
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations :

We really had a great time at Jungle Island. It was awesome to be able to interact with the animals and all the people who worked there were very intelligent and well-informed. The only downside was the cost of the photographs, but they were the same that you would find at ANY location. Plus if you purchase the CD, you can take as many pictures as you want.

Good addition to fill a couple of hours
By Tom from Illinois from Edwardsville, IL on
Pros:
Easy to use Go Card, Beautiful grounds, Great animals some rare
Cons:
Additional charges, Shows are just okay,
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations :

Beautiful animals all around but the park is rather spread out, lots of walking. The animal shows were more about the show than the animals. The "trainers" were young women who could only handle young animals. They would let you hold an animal, but you couldn't take a picture. Only their photog. could take a picture. Picture prices way too high.
