Frequently Asked Questions

How do I activate my pass?

Simply visit your first attraction! After activation, you have 30 days to see the rest of your attractions.

How do I use my pass to access the Statue of Liberty?

There are a few steps:

  1. Present your New York Explorer Pass at one of the CitySights Ticket locations:
    • Times Square: 234 W. 42nd Street, between 7th and 8th Avenue (Inside Madame Tussauds)
    • Central Park: 56 W. 56th Street, between 5th and 6th Street (Inside Central Park Sightseeing)
    • Downtown: 17 Park Row and Ann Street (Inside J&R Gray Line Visitor Center)
  2. Your Pass will be validated in exchange for a CitySights Voucher.
  3. Take that Voucher to the CitySights Battery Park Bus Stop #12 located at Battery Place and State Street. A CitySights agent will exchange your CitySights Voucher for a Ferry Ticket. Once you have a received this ticket, you can enter the Statue Cruises Boarding/Security Line.

Please note that although you are skipping the ticket line for the Fery, everyone MUST wait in the security line before boarding. Do not get into this line without your actual Statue of Liberty Ferry Ticket!

The Status of Liberty requires airport-level security, so be prepared for a long wait. Allow at least 2 hours to visit one island and 4 hours to visit both islands.

How do CitySights NY Tours work?

Each NYC Explorer Pass holder may choose one of the following tours:

  • All Around Tour (requires a $14.00 upgrade fee)
  • Brooklyn Tour
  • Downtown Tour (Hop On Hop Off) Bonus Brooklyn
  • Multilingual Upper and Lower Manhattan Tour
  • Uptown Treasures of Harem Tour
  • Night Tour
  • Uptown Treasures Tour Bonus Bronx Tour

Once you decide which tour you would like to take, present your Explorer Pass at one of the CitySights NY Ticket Desks:

  • Central Park: Central Park Sightseeing (56 W. 56th St between 5th & 6th Ave)
  • Times Square: Madame Tussauds (234 W. 42nd St, between 7th & 8th Ave)

You will receive a ticket for the bus tour of your choice and they will provide a map to your departure.

Is my pass valid all day?

Yes, the New York Explorer Pass allows entrance into attractions during all operating hours.

What is your refund policy?

By KW from Pensacola, FL on

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

You can only pick ONE Bus Tour ex. if you take a day bus, you cannot take the night tour even though it is shown as a separate "attraction" on this website. Use the chat window for clarification.

Does Not Shorten Wait Times
By Still Waiting in Line in NYC from Ottawa, ON on
Pros:
price
Cons:
Cannot Jump Lines
Best Uses:
All attractions

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

The card was good in the sense that all attractions were pre-paid. The website advertised that you could skip the lines or go in special "Pass" lines. This was not the case. Had to wait in long lines for some attractions. All museums in NYC are free of charge...any admission prices are a "suggested" donation cost. You can donate any amount (i.e $1) for entrance to a museum.

Best Uses:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

Converting our vouchers for Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty was a pain, you had to find this little place to get it changed, then when you went to get on the boat you had to go and see someone else to have that changed again, we wasted best part of the day on this, the hop on hop off bus was disgusting dirty and looked like it needed some servicing.

Great experience with Explorer Pass!
By Johanne from Norway on
Pros:
Easy access, Value for Money
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

We travelled from Norway to the US and spent only one day (two nights) in New York. We got the 5 item Explorer pass as a gift from my cousin. With the pass we were able to quickly access several activities very effectively in the big city. We started out taking the water taxi. The "device" to scan our tickets were out-of-order at Battery park, but they still accepted the tickets. Secondly we rented bikes and went for a ride in Central Park. Again a smooth and effective process with the explorer pass. On our way to Empire state building we passed the Ripley museum ,and because we had the pass we decided to take a quick trip inside. This was not planned, but turned out to be a fun experience! Empire state was a disappointment because of all the people inside. We did not spend much time there, but it did not feel like a big loss because we had gotten so much out of our day pass that it did not matter. All in all a great day and lots of savings because we had a pass.

A great way to see NYC!
By Ginny Verified Reviewer from Kennebunk, ME on
Pros:
Easily Recognized Pass, Pass By Crowds, Easy to use, Saved a lot of money
Best Uses:
Top Of The Rock, Museums, Ferry,
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

We went to NYC with our family of 6. Many of us had never been there before and we were uncertain of what to do and how the crowds would be. We used the explorer passes to help us decide what to do and we were not disappointed. We saw great sites and were able to bypass crowds. The passes seemed to be recognized all around the city. Great product and we had an excellent trip!
