Frequently Asked Questions Show All

How do I activate my pass?

Easy: simply visit your first attraction!

When does my pass expire?

You have 1 year from the purchase date to begin using your pass. Once you activate your pass by visiting your first attraction, your pass is good for 30 days.

Is my pass valid all day?

You bet! Feel free to visit the attractions any time of the day as long as they are open or operating.

Nope, choose as you go. The pass is good for any combination of the number of attractions you purchased.

How do I use my pass to visit the Statue of Liberty?

Present your New York Explorer Pass at one of the Statue Cruises ticket counters inside Castle Clinton at Battery Park.

Once you have obtained your Ferry Ticket from Castle Clinton you must wait in the security line before boarding.

The Ferry requires is airport-level security, so be prepared for a long wait. Allow at least 2 hours to visit one island and 4 hours to visit Ellis & Liberty islands.

Your pass provides you access to the island only. Pedestal & crown access requires reservations and space is limited, and is not included with your pass.

How do CitySights NY Tours work?

Each NYC Explorer Pass holder may choose one of the following tours:

  • All Around Tour (requires a $14.00 upgrade fee)
  • Brooklyn Tour
  • Downtown Tour (Hop On Hop Off) Bonus Brooklyn

  • Uptown Treasures of Harem Tour
  • Night Tour
  • Woodbury Common Premium Outlets Day Trip

Once you decide which tour you would like to take, present your Explorer Pass at one of the CitySights NY Ticket Desks:

  • Times Square: Madame Tussauds (1540 Broadway 45th St & 7th Ave)
  • David Rubinstein Atrium at Lincoln Center (61 W. 62nd St, entrance on Broadway & Columbus)

You will receive a ticket for the bus tour of your choice and they will provide a map to your departure.

What is your refund policy?

You’ll have a full year from the day you purchase your passes to receive a full refund, as long as they are unused. However, the passes are non-refundable once they're activated.

How much will I save?

Compare the price of the pass to the gate prices of the attractions you want to visit to see how much you can save.

We give you the flexibility to create your own itinerary and choose the attractions you want to visit depending on your interests.

For inspiration, check out some of our sample itineraries, insider tips, and more for info on all the fun things to do in New York so you can make the most of your time here.

Can I visit an attraction more than once?

No. Your pass includes only one visit per attraction.

What is the age cut off for child tickets?

Child passes are for ages 3–12. Most attractions are free for children under 3.

Can I purchase passes on the spur of the moment when I arrive?

Of course! With instant digital delivery, you can purchase and access passes right on your mobile device. Or, visit one of our local purchase locations.

I have a voucher, where can I pick up my card?

View a list of locations where you can redeem your voucher.

Do I need to make reservations to visit the attractions?

This symbol indicates that an attraction requires reservations.

Some attractions require a credit card to hold a reservation. In these cases, your credit card will not be charged unless you do not show up for your reservation.

If you are interested in taking the Gossip Girl, NY TV and Movie Tour and Sex and the City Tour, you should pick up your tickets as soon as possible after arriving in the city.

What’s the catch?

There’s no catch. New York Explorer Pass has a partnership with all of the participating attractions to make your visit to New York as memorable as possible and to help you save time and money.

Can I share my pass with a friend or sell it?

No. The New York Explorer Pass is non-transferrable and may not be re-sold.

What happens if an attraction is closed or a tour is cancelled due to weather or other problem?

While we do our best to ensure that all attractions are available, events happen that are out of our control. The great thing about a New York Explorer Pass is that there are so many attractions to choose from. If an attraction is closed, or cannot be visited for some reason, we know you'll find a fun alternative in your guidebook!

What do I do if my New York Explorer Pass is lost or stolen?

Unfortunately, it cannot be replaced if it is lost or stolen. Please treat the card like cash.

I still have questions!

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

Explorer Pass was a good value but we did experience some issues. The pass was beneficial in its flexibility for itinerary. You do need to read carefully as there are some limitations where you can pick one or another attraction but not both. We purchased a three attraction pass and were able to visit the Natural History museum, the Empire State Bldg, and the Intrepid Museum. This pass also seemed to include a bonus bus tour although this was the cause of our negative experience. We were hoping to use the bus as a mode of transportation, to rest/recharge, and of course to learn about the sites. When riding early in the morning, there was plenty of room. Later in the day, the busses can get crowded so don't count on getting upper deck when its nice, and don't count on being sheltered when its raining weather dependent. It is also possible that when the bus stops, no one may get off and the bus may be full. The bus was supposed to run until 7 pm. We were waiting at a bus stop at 6:00 PM and saw the bus approach. It made no effort to stop at all and there did not seem to be any passengers (at least on the top deck). We ended up taking the subway. Our last day in NY, our pass would not work at the Intrepid Museum. The museum staff said that we had used our three attractions. When I inquired further, the bus was listed as a separate attraction. I explained that the bus was to be a bonus. We needed to call customer service. After 15-20 min. I finally was able to get in touch with a supervisor who eventually did make it right. I would not consider the customer service resolution an easy processes but at least we could speak with a human. So, it is a great value and probably a no-brainer especially if not using the bus. If you are using the bus tour, it may be fine as a tour loop but beware of inconsistencies if using it as on-off transportation.

Smart Destinations Response: Hi Dave, Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your experience with the bus in New York. The tour buses can be tricky if you are trying to use them as a sole means of transportation around the city because they are meant to be an attraction. We apologize for any confusion surrounding this tour and hope you enjoyed the rest of your time using your Explorer Pass. This is good advice for future customers and for us so we can work to improve.

Perfect for us, but could have been easier to use

Cons:
Not Very User Friendly,
Best Uses:

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

It would have been really handy if the QR code was a separate item so it could be stored in the passes app on an iPhone or as a quick link. Instead I had to scroll down to find it every time. Some of the attractions were hard to find and the Explorer Pass could have been better sign posted, e.g. the bus tour. The On Location Tours we decided was too complicated to locate. I also somehow ended up with German instructions, not sure how. But would still recommend to other travellers and would use again if visiting NY.

Not worth purchasing if you want to include bicycle rental
By Jash from Seattle on
Pros:
Must-see attractions included, Flexible Schedule, Skip the lines Benefit
Cons:
Pricey product,
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

We bought two of these, and used them to see the Rockefeller Center, museum of art and rent bicycles near central park. The first two were worth it, but the bicycle rental was overpriced. In fact right near the bicycle rental were other bicycle rental place that were much cheaper. So overall, I do not think purchasing the pass was worth it.

Smart Destinations Response: Hi Jash, Although it sounds like you had a nice trip, we are sorry to hear that the bike rental did not meet your expectations while in New York. We take our customer feedback very seriously and want to thank you for letting us know how we can improve.

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

I purchesed the 7 attraction package and there was plenty to see and do with this deal. All of the main attractions are covered as well as some slightly lesser known gems. The pass covered access to 9/11 tribute center and tour although if the pass could somehow include access to the 9/11 museum also I think it would be improved. Guided tours described on booklet are not exactly the same as those for some of the venues (lincoln center) so you have to keep an eye on the website. I think this could be more clear on the booklet.

Worked well

Skip the lines not available,
Best Uses:
Short Stays, Great for families, Budget Travelers General Sightseeing
Bottom Line:

Comments about Smart Destinations New York Explorer Pass:

I choose to print the passes on home computer. You still had to wait in line with your passes to get the tickets at the place you choose to see. The City Bus tour ticket counter inside Madame Tussauds was the longest wait time of about 20 minutes. Over all it went smoothly. I was disappointed in the Downtown Manhattan bus tour. My son and I sat in the lower section of the bus due to his disability. It was 85 degrees that afternoon and I was shocked that the windows only opened 4 inches so there was no breeze coming through and it was very hot and uncomfortable. You could not see through the windows well because the windows on the outside were covered in advertisements that had a grid pattern on the inside. So you saw bits of New York through a grid pattern. You would think if you can sit up top of the bus in the open that the windows in the bottom would open fully. Made no sense to me.

I appreciate the fact that the pass makes it possible to choose your own sites to visit off a comprehensive list including all major attractions, while saving good money. Great organized way to visit NY without being forced to stick to an unreasonable schedule. You can just make your own itinerary according to personal preference and rhythm, while also saving some money in the process.
