Description
When a Tutankhamen exhibition last came to New York it caused quite a stir. The beautiful treasures on display and especially the golden face of the Boy king’s sarcophagus turned King Tut into an instant celebrity. Lines ran around the block and Steve Martin had a hit with a song lauding “Funky Tut.”

Now is your chance -- and maybe your only chance -- to behold the legendary treasures of King Tut because on January 2nd, 2011, Tutankhamen returns to Egypt.

Uniquely spared from the depredations of tomb robbers, Tutankhamen’s tomb yielded a dazzling array of possessions which stunned the world when unearthed. Many of these items are on display at the exhibit, along with antiquities representing his family and contemporaries. There are 10 galleries displaying 130 artifacts, including the golden canopic coffinette (pictured above) that along with the Sphinx and the Pyramids is one of the iconic images of ancient Egypt’s splendor. There is also the crown found on his head when the tomb was discovered, his gilded coffin, and many other fascinating artifacts. Plus new scientific findings about King Tut on display for the first time in a gallery devoted to the latest DNA studies and other forensic information about his life and death (click here to read more from the New York Times coverage).

King Tut Exhibit = Awesome

Comments about Smart Destinations :

I loved the King Tut exhibit. There were over 150 ancient Egyptian artifacts on display, so many of which actually came from King Tut's tomb. The quality of this exhibit far surpasses the ancient Egypt exhibit in many ways. First of all, the King Tut exhibit was very personal, and I was able to hear the whole story behind the boy king's life and tragic death. I also loved the Mummy. Who cares if it was a replica, it was awesome. And besides, who would really think a 3,000 + year old mummy would be taken out of Egypt and paraded around America for paying tourists? Come now, it's far to fragile to ever leave Egypt! Overall, I got a great value for my ticket, and also saw the 3D movie on mummies for only $5 bucks! I would definitely recommend!

Comments about Smart Destinations :

The artifacts on display at the King Tut exhibit are amazing! They were so detailed, and each piece has it's own story. I left the exhibit having learned not just about King Tut, but about ancient egypt in general. The artifacts were displayed seamlessly. You are able to view them from all sides since they are in a glass case. Also, the item description was printed on all sides on the case, so you could read and view each artifact from any direction. This is the last time any of these artifacts will ever be in the USA, because they are being shipped back to Egypt forever. You must see this exhibit before it's too late!
