A visit to the USS Intrepid brings you the best of sea, air and space, right in the heart of the city! This is easily one of Manhattan’s most popular attractions, and should be a “must” on any visitor’s itinerary. The Intrepid Air, Sea & Space Museum is home to a Harrier jet, capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, a Blackbird spy plane, an F-14 Tomcat, a Phantom, and a MiG 21. It’s worth the trip just to see the infamous Concorde jet, a commercial airliner, famous for its incredibly short trips from both London and Paris to New York. Throw in a trip to the Intrepid’s newest attraction, the Space Shuttle Enterprise, and you have the makings of an unforgettable NYC outing!
Visitors to The Intrepid can see the USS Growler, which sits across the pier from the Intrepid, and is the only American strategic missile submarine to ever be made open to the public. Museum visitors can go below deck to check out the once top-secret missile command center, torpedo rooms, attack center, and even the crew’s mess hall!
In addition to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s massive and permanent mainstays, the museum also regularly features informational exhibits such as “Inspiration and Industry: American Women on the Home Front”, and various lectures and short-term themed events.
Beginning in the summer of 2012, the world-famous space shuttle Enterprise will be housed on the new Space Shuttle Pavilion, on the flight deck of the Intrepid. The Museum recently rolled out the sixth installment in a video series that explores the space shuttle Enterprise’s journey to New York City. Don’t miss it!
Be sure to also check out the Intrepid Museum’s Exploreum, a 13,000 foot interactive exhibition space on the deck of the Intrepid. Designed for children of all ages, the Exploreum allows visitors to delve into four zones; focusing on water, air, space, and life at sea aboard the Intrepid.
Guided tours are available at the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum, as are audio tours in seven languages. Don’t leave without checking out one of Intrepid’s awesome simulators…just adding another dimension of fun to your museum experience!
