More like a sanctuary than a museum, The Museum of Modern Art in Midtown Manhattan has earned its reputation as the greatest collection of modern art in the world, and this world-famous institution is well worth the trip for anyone visiting New York City. An inspirational building in its own rite, filled with light and contemporary space and design, MoMA houses such masterpieces as Claude Monet’s Reflections of Clouds on the Water-Lily Pond, and Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. That’s right, many of those pieces you perhaps thought of as classics are actually modern art! Not limited to the insanely abstract; MoMA holds the works of such masters as Paul Gauguin, Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, and Paul Cézanne.

In addition, the rebels of the art world are represented here en masse and in all their interpretative splendor. Marvel at the works of Jackson Pollack, Salvador Dali, Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Dorothea Lange, and Wilson Bentley, among countless others.

In addition to its premier permanent collection, The Museum of Modern Art regularly features a truly unique range of ever-changing temporary exhibitions, such as: “Pictures by Women: A History of Modern Photography”; “Abstract Expressionist New York”; “Staging Action: Performance in Photography since 1960”; “Counter Space: Design and the Modern Kitchen”; “Picasso Guitars: 1912-1914”; “On to Pop”; “Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures”; and “Looking at Music 3.0”. MoMA also regularly screens artistic, foreign, and educational films, which are a great way to learn something on a rainy day! Enjoy lunch in one of MoMA’s three eateries, which feature an excellent variety of fresh and seasonal foods, and be sure to stop in at MoMA’s flagship Book & Design Store and pick up a print of your favorite piece, or an artisanal piece of functional modern art!

The Museum of Modern Art describes itself as “a place that fuels creativity, ignites minds, and provides inspiration.” Agreed! Get inspired when you come to New York, and experience the institution that houses the world’s most revolutionary and legendary contemporary art.

Comments about Smart Destinations Museum of Modern Art:

My nine year old loved the kids audio tour. Only wish they had more audio tour options available for children as the paintings for the childrens audio tour are limited. He eventually started listening to the adult ones. The wait for the rain room was over 3 hours so we didn't get to go.

Thumbs up from a non-artsy type person!

Comments about Smart Destinations Museum of Modern Art:

This review comes with a disclaimer: I'm not much for art museums. Personally, I'd rather go do something less...artsy? At the same time, we visited this museum at the end of our trip and only had an hour to go through it. This all being said: I liked it! They had so many non-traditional exhibits that it really caught my interest. And at the same time, the simple Campbell's soup painting (which we've all read about in school) was probably my favorite of all. So I just might have to make my way back during my next trip to NYC Big bonus (especially since we were short on time): we went on President's Day and the line was a mile long. Explorer's Pass let us skip that line and go to will call to pick up our tickets. Awesome feature!
