This year, The New York Botanical Garden celebrates its 120th Anniversary, and invites you to celebrate as well by paying a visit to one of the most oxygen-filled spaces in New York City! Located in the surprisingly green and beautiful borough of the Bronx, this garden was designated by New York State Legislature in 1891 to be “a botanic garden of the highest class for the City of New York”, and was backed by such powerful names as Vanderbilt, Carnegie, and Morgan.
The New York Botanical Garden has been classified as a National Historic Landmark site, and considers itself to be not only a garden, but a living museum dedicated to the propagation of horticulture and plant education. Sound like a boring science project? Not at all! This 250 acre park contains some of the most stunning scenery in New York, including rolling hills, tranquil waterfalls, ponds, rock formations, The Bronx River, and 50 acres of the green forest that once grew rampant where New York City stands today. The New York Botanical Garden is a great escape from the busy streets of Manhattan, and a great place to spend an afternoon passively learning and relaxing.
Fifty garden-segments containing over one million plants give you ample ground to explore. The New York Botanical Garden’s highlights include: a veritable forest of 30,000 trees, many of which are over 200 years old; the Arthur and Janet Ross Conifer Arboretum; The Rock Garden; herbaceous and mixed borders with stunning designs including the Jane Watson Irwin Perennial Garden and Ladies’ Border; The Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden; and a delightfully delicate collection of over 8,000 orchids in the Nolen Greenhouse for Living Collections, which by the way, is “the most sophisticated behind-the-scenes greenhouse of any botanical garden in the United States”.
Five major seasonal exhibitions complement the existing beauty of the permanent gardens each year, and highlight such displays as: “The Orchid Show”; “Monets Garden"; and “The Holiday Train Show”. Fun for the whole family can be had in the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden, which features hands-on projects! Audio tours of the gardens are available. Every season is equally beautiful and unique at The New York Botanical Garden, so you aren’t limited to just spring and summertime visits! Lose yourself in the exotic flora and terrain of this National Landmark when you visit New York, then pay a visit to “Shop in the Garden”, which supports the garden’s educational goals of spreading the word about the importance and power of green!
