Manhattan is all about skylines. Why not try to capture as many unique views as possible on your trip? The Empire State Building may be more recognizable, but Top of the Rock affords views that are just as spectacular, and it tends to be less crowded. Another thing Top of the Rock can offer that the Empire State Building will never be able to is, well—a view of the Empire State Building! Boasting a 360-degree panorama of New York, visitors can marvel at the city from this 55,000 square-foot, multi-tiered observation deck at Rockefeller Plaza’s “30 Rock” building, located between 5th and 6th Streets.

Top of the Rock is named for its location spanning the top few floors of Rockefeller Plaza’s GE Building, an Art Deco style skyscraper built during the Great Depression by the infamous John D. Rockefeller as a gift to his beloved Manhattan.

Rockefeller Plaza is known for its massive and ornately-decorated Christmas tree and ice-skating rink; both at the base of the GE building, and both staples on the winter tourism checklist. Renovated in 2005, Top of the Rock affords visitors completely unobstructed views of New York City in all its glory. Ride a beautiful glass elevator 70 stories into the air, while watching educational videos provided by NBC, one of many well-known companies housed at Rockefeller Plaza.

Once at the top, super-helpful staff can assist you in locating landmarks on the horizon, and will be more than happy to snap some great shots of you and your companions with a stunning New York backdrop. Take your pick of viewing the city from a fully-enclosed indoor observation deck in inclement weather or one of the open-air terraces in the summertime, or make use of both! A trip to Top of the Rock is both breathtaking and informative, and guests can check out the multimedia exhibit that goes into detail about the history behind Rockefeller Plaza.

A visit to Top of the Rock is a brilliant way to squeeze a little romance into the fast pace of a New York City visit. Try going just before dusk on a clear day and watching the sun set over Manhattan. It’s an unforgettable experience that will send you home with spectacular photos as well as memories you can only get from being in the heart of Old New York!

great view at the Empire!
By Nathan from Belgium on
Bottom Line:

Comments about Smart Destinations Top of the Rock Observation Deck:

Great of course seeing the empire which is of course not possible being on the empire itself. and this isn't actually so much lower. But we didn't see the point of having some spots with glass on the lowest levels. At first like almost everybody else we didn't knew that there was a glass-free spot at the top so we took a lot of unnessacary pictures and wasted some time there.

Must-See NYC Attraction
By Katie Verified Reviewer from Boston, MA on
Pros:
Spectacular Views Of City, Good Indoors Or Outdoors, Fun Elevator Ride
Cons:
Wait Time For Elevators, Ticketing Process,

Comments about Smart Destinations Top of the Rock Observation Deck:

Having visited the Empire State Building years earlier, my family's visit to the Top of the Rock was a great experience and a new "must see" in NYC. The views from the top were spectacular, including good views of Central Park, the Empire State Building, the new Freedom Tower, and even the Statue of Liberty in the distance. The top deck has 3 different levels (including indoor and outdoor options). The outside areas had tall glass panes about 15 feet tall so it felt safer (especially for children) and the wind does not hit you. There were several observation meters to get better views. The only downside is that this is a popular attraction with limited number of elevators to take visitors up or down (I counted 2), so expect to wait for the elevators going up and going down. The ride inside the elevators is fun (they have a cool glass ceiling with lights inside the elevator shaft so you can see how fast and far up you are going).

Comments about Smart Destinations Top of the Rock Observation Deck:

This is a great attraction in NYC. I haven't been to the Empire State Building so I can't compare the two, but I can say that it's cool to be so high and up and SEE the Empire State Building (which is probably prettier from the outside than the inside.. my guess) I loved the exhibit, there's a spot where the floor is done so you feel like you are one of the original construction workers sitting on a beam up high (it's an illusion) it's very cool. I highly recommend
