WOW! The new Intrepid Museum is an interactive complex that should not be missed, no matter what your age or affinity for military vessels.. Located at the new Pier 86 park facility, this piping-hot NYC attraction boasts 30 restored aircraft, a submarine, and a British Airways Concorde jet! Billed as “The Most Inspiring Adventure in America”, the Intrepid Museum is an informational, must-see tourist site.

The USS Intrepid is a war hero in its own rite, having served in World War II, The Vietnam War, the Cold War’s anti-submarine patrols, and on NASA recovery missions. After the September 11th tragedy, it served as a temporary headquarters for the FBI’s New York Field Office. With a 3,000 person capacity, the USS Intrepid is worth a visit for its own unique features, as well as for the aircraft it houses.

A visit to the USS Intrepid is like traveling back to the more suspenseful times of the conflict-ridden 20th century. This exhibition features a Harrier jet, capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, a Blackbird spy plane, an F-14 Tomcat, a Phantom, and a MiG 21. It’s worth the trip just to see the infamous Concorde jet, a commercial airliner, famous for its incredibly short trips from both London and Paris to New York. The Concorde first saw flight in 1976, with its transatlantic service coming to a dramatic end in 2003 following a fatal Air France crash.

The USS Growler, which sits across the pier from Intrepid, is the only American strategic missile submarine to ever be made open to the public. Museum visitors can go below deck to check out the once top-secret missile command center, torpedo rooms, attack center, and even the crew’s mess hall!

In addition to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s massive and permanent mainstays, the it also regularly features informational exhibits such as “Inspiration and Industry: American Women on the Home Front”, and various lectures and short-term themed events such as “Girls in Science and Engineering Day”.

Be sure to check out the Intrepid Museum’s Exploreum, a 13,000 foot interactive exhibition space on the deck of the Intrepid. Designed for children of all ages, the Exploreum allows visitors to delve into four zones; focusing on water, air, space, and life at sea aboard the Intrepid.

Guided tours are available at the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum, as are audio tours in seven languages. Don’t leave without checking out one of Intrepid’s awesome simulators…just adding another dimension of fun to your museum experience!
