With nearly 400,000 visitors each year, Bishop Museum serves as one of Hawaii's top destinations, providing hands-on educational experiences to help residents and visitors appreciate and embrace Hawaii's rich culture.
Daily programs allow you to discover more about Hawaiian and Polynesian cultures through live, interactive presentations and exhibit tours. Planetarium shows showcase Polynesian skies and how voyagers navigated the Pacific using the stars.
Bishop Museum has taken the three floors of Hawaiian Hall and overlayed upon them the physical and spiritual realms of the Hawaiian people – from the first floor of Kai Äkea, the wide expanse of the sea, to the second floor, Wao Känaka, the realm of man, and the third floor, Wao Lani, the heavenly realm. We reflect upon the gods, their different body forms, areas of responsibility, and their seasonal changes. We speak of the lunar cycle, which determined how Hawaiians fished, planted, and worshipped. We are filling the hall with Hawaiian voices, through chants, proverbs, and mo’olelo, stories.
The aim of the Museum has always been to record, preserve and tell the stories of Hawai‘i and the Pacific, inspiring guests to embrace and experience Hawaii’s natural and cultural world. To that end, it contains 14 million insect specimens; 6 million marine and lands shells; 2.4 million Pacific and Hawaiian artifacts; 1 million historic photographs; 500,000 marine invertebrates; 490,000 plant specimens; 130,000 fish specimens; 85,000 bird and mammal specimens and a library of 115,000 bound volumes.
