A trip to the Dole Plantation is a must for visitors to Oahu, and the Dole Plantation Pineapple Express train is a great way to learn about the history of the pineapple and the story of James Dole, pioneer of the pineapple industry in Hawaii. This two-mile, 20-minute, fully-narrated train ride takes you past some of the North Shore's most gorgeous scenery, through a working plantation and past a variety of other tropical crops.

Included in your admission is the Plantation Garden Tour and audio guide. Visitors have the unique opportunity to get an up-close look at all the crops grown on Oahu's breathtaking North Shore—not just the plantation’s namesake pineapples, but also coffee, cacao, bananas, mango, papaya, and more. This self-guided tour of eight different gardens will appeal to all your senses.

Driving Directions

By Car: From Waikiki, take H1 West to H2 North. Continue to Kamehameha Highway (99). Dole Plantation is located at 64-1550 Kamehameha Highway. Approximately a 40-minute drive from Waikiki.

Public Transportation

TheBus: From Waikiki, take bus 8, 19, 20, 47, or 58 to Ala Moana Shopping Center. These busses run every 8 to 10 minutes. From Ala Moana, transfer to bus 52 'Wahiawa-Circle Island' and get off at Dole Plantation. The bus ride takes approximately an hour and forty-five minutes. One-way fare: $2

See the dazzling colors of ripening tropical fruit and revel in the aroma of sweet ripe pineapples ready to be picked. You'll also see the cacao pods that are used to make Waialua's signature single-estate chocolate. Yum!

Train aficionados will be interested in the authentic detail of the Pineapple Express, which has the same power system as the full-size plantation engine, the Lincoln. It runs on 24 inch gauge rails and has a very tight turning radius of just 40 feet.

The Dole Plantation is a blend of Hawaiian history and island kitsch, which is all part of its appeal. Don't leave without sampling the pineapple ice cream or a Dole Whip drink, served in a cute souvenir cup. Made on-site with fresh pineapples, these drinks give you a true taste of the islands. Kamaaina (island locals) recommend the Dole Plantation gift shop as a great place to pick up souvenirs for friends and family on the mainland, especially artisan and culinary gifts like pineapple-flavored gummy bears, sugar-roasted macadamia nuts, or fresh-picked whole pineapples! Lovely train ride all around plantation. Well appointed gift shop. Yummy Icecream. Lovely pineapples. My children really enjoyed the Maze. My kids caught the bus to the plantation on another day to do the maze, and were perfectly safe.

The train ride was cool, the kids of course loved it and it was informative and fun for my husband and I too. The part I liked the most was the family photo they take for you next to the train, yes you have to buy the picture later but it was great because when you are a family trabeling alone you have rare opportunities for a family photo.

Now, don't get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with the train. Great information about the plantation presented through a speaker system, the scenery is nice and it's nice to sit down after walking around for awhile, but I think kids would enjoy this more than the adults. I would recommend it to people with children.

My wife and I toured the Dole Plantation while on our honeymoon. We went to several places but really enjoyed our time at the Dole Plantation. We attempted the maze without much success.
