New! Thanks to an abundant average rainfall of 165 inches, the Lyon Arboretum offers a tropical rainforest setting that is ideal for growing an enormous diversity of plants which is one of the reasons why the grounds often serve as an outdoor laboratory for school and university students and classes. The Lyon Arboretum opened to the public in 1972 and its collection now features heliconias, gingers, aroids, bromeliads, native Hawaiian plants, and one of the largest palm collections found in a botanical garden.

Here are what a few reviewers have to say:

“Too much beauty here--especially Inspiration Point. It hurts the eyes!”

“It's a beautiful place and so nice to get away from the Waikiki bustle.”

“Gorgeous setting and beautiful valley with a lot of history. Great collection of plants and trees from all over the world including a native Hawaiian collection.”

Comments about Smart Destinations :

We were very happy that the driver for the Rainforest/Waterfall Tour let us know about it. When we bought card it wasn't offered. Just a great combination and use of our time since the Waterfall Tour is next door. Because of the free transportation from waterfall tour we were able to see the beautiful Arboretum. It is very serene and green. The light rain was soothing and yes, we really did see a rainbow! I recommend the Arboretum as a great addition to the waterfall tour. The 2 tours together made great use of our time and we got to see some of the best nature Oahu has to offer.
