Free ride with the Go Oahu Card ($25 w/out the Card)

Description

Enjoy an outrigger canoe ride surfing the waves off the shores of Waikiki Beach with Diamond Head on one side. Ancient Hawaiians used canoes for fishing and travelling between islands.

In present day Hawaii, some canoes are still used for recreational interisland travels, but most are used mainly for competition racing. Meet under the hau trees shading the Hawaiian Ocean's Waikiki beach or stand near the Duke Kahanamoku statue.

The canoe captain will instruct you on how to paddle a canoe which was once used for competitive racing. You will be assigned and positioned to specific seats on the canoe to maximize your fun and pleasure on the water. The fun begins once you leave shore.

The captain will steer you through the ocean and position the canoe amongst surfers. While waiting for the perfect wave enjoy the shoreline view of Waikiki and Diamond Head. When the perfect wave comes you will be riding the canoe as it surfs to shore alongside surfboarders.

Note:
For safety reasons a minimum of 4 people is needed for the canoe to go out in the ocean. Parties of less than 4 people will be grouped to ensure the necessary numbers for a safe ride.

Ride was fun, guides were rude

Comments about Smart Destinations Hawaiian Oceans Outrigger Canoe Ride:

I usually don't write reviews for things, but this was so bad, that I couldn't wait to give feedback. I had the same experience as the person below. The canoe was a blast, but the guides were extremely rude. I'm from Hawaii and I could not believe how unprofessional they were. Waikiki is a beginner beach for a lot of things, specifically surfing and paddle-boarding. As we went out onto the water the guide looked like he was ready to fight a tourist at any moment. As we were paddling out a beginning paddle-boarder wasn't paying attention and our guide ran right into him. I was floored. The guide stared the guy down and wanted to fight him!!! He was a tourist just trying to learn! He didn't see the canoe, and we hit him! The woman who led our other ride didn't give clear directions on what to do and then would degrade people for not following her lead. The guides had very prideful attitudes and I would not suggest this to anyone.

Comments about Smart Destinations Hawaiian Oceans Outrigger Canoe Ride:

We had to wait til there were enough people to take out the outrigger canoe. The captain was nice and placed us into position based on our size and strength. The canoe sat 6 people plus the captain who did the steering.A young boy approached the canoe, before we got into it and used a bucket to bail out the water. That scared me a bit. There was a woman who joined us on the canoe who actually directed us during the ride. We had to really paddle hard to get out to the waves, wait for the wave and then paddle like mad to catch the wave. It was fun! We rode 2 waves, so the activity only lasted no more than 20 minutes including instructions. A single lady who joined us said she paid [$] for her seat. I was worried that we would hit some swimmers, but they always seem to clear the way! Fun, but too quick!!

Canoe was fun, guides were not
By Big John from Vancouver, WA on 10/6/2009

Comments about Smart Destinations Hawaiian Oceans Outrigger Canoe Ride:

This was the one experience that was bad on our whole trip. My wife and I decided to do this together on our honeymoon. We were treated well enough at the booth, but when we got to the canoe, the two guides were rude and condescending, making statements that the did not think we could paddle. When I assured them that I could, and in fact paddle rafts through white water, The Steerman snarled "This isn't Whitewater!" The lady guide was also rude to my wife, calling her, "Dead wood" when she wasn't paddling to the guide's satisfaction. After our trip was over and my wife was looking at photos, I overheard the guides talking disparagingly of us to the next group to go out. The experience with this outfit convinced us NOT to use the other services offered by this company.
