If you find yourself wondering “What the heck is a submersible scooter?” you’re definitely not alone. This is one of the most bizarre, but exhilarating (and easy) ways to enjoy an underwater “dive,” with no actual dive training or experience necessary! Read on…
Submersible scooters are underwater vehicles that let you ride deep below the surface, effortlessly moving along at your own pace and enjoying the scenery while hooked up to oxygen. In essence, you’re sealed inside of your own personal bubble! To operate a submersible scooter, you don’t even technically need to know how to swim (although it’s recommended!) These underwater scooters generally don’t go deeper than 7 or 8 feet, which is just deep enough to make you feel like you’re diving, and to show you some stunning coral, turtles, exotic tropical fish and other sea creatures. The scooters are connected to a floating buoy line for your safety, and your experienced guides are close by to make sure the tour is pleasant and worry-free.
Submersible scooters, while certainly enjoying newfound popularity, are by no means new. They have been used by the U.S. Navy for quite a few years, and also for personal exploration and research. Furthermore, they are engine-free, and therefore environmentally-friendly—good news for Maunalua Bay coral reefs you’ll be exploring! So don your apparatus and let the tiny battery-operated motor propel you through the water, swimming alongside some very cool sea creatures if you’re lucky!
The area you’ll be exploring--Maunalua Bay-- forms the shoreline of the Hawaii Kai area of Honolulu. The bay is formed between Diamond Head, and Koko Head. Diamond Head is a world-famous volcanic cone, named by mistaken sailors who believed the calcite in its rocks were diamonds. Diamond Head is one of many volcanic vents and cones that form the Honolulu Volcanic Series, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area due to its hiking opportunities. Maunalua Bay’s beach is one of Hawaii’s most scenic, and the marine life within its crystal clear waters include turtles, brightly-colored tropical fish, and stunning coral; all thriving in a truly natural ecosystem.

Comments about Smart Destinations :
This tour was amazing. The guides were very knowledgeable and friendly and easily handled people with all different experience and comfort levels. The scooters were very unique and fun. We were able to see turtles and about five different kinds if fish. They also provided snorkel gear which was an added bonus. When you weren't in the scooters you could still enjoy the water. They also provided water and snacks and offered pictures and video. We would definitely do thus again. I'd go to Germaine's luau not on the go oahu card in order to take advantage of this bonus activity. Germaine's has a discount if you buy the tickets through go oahu but don't use the card.
