Gator-watching in the Everglades, shopping in beachside boutiques, star-gazing, tanning on South Beach, and fine dining on the boardwalk…sounds like the perfect Florida day, right? Throw in the transportation, and it really doesn’t get much better. This day-long excursion brings you the best of South Florida, au naturel! If you’ve tired of theme parks, or want to see Florida the way it was meant to be experienced, this is a great option.
Your trip begins with a wild ride through the Florida Everglades on a uniquely-Floridian airboat (don’t worry; the gators can’t get you up there!) You’ll soon realize that the Florida Everglades are more than just a gator-filled swamp. This subtropical wetland region spans much of the southern part of the state, beginning (contrary to popular belief) near Orlando, and running all the way to the Florida Bay. The Everglades are a land of extremes, their shape characterized by both water and fire—they flood in the rainy season, and often experience fires during the summer months. In addition to alligators, visitors can also see colorful water birds, and vast systems of beautiful cypress trees. The serene, but harsh environment was named Laguna del Espiritu Santo (“Lake of the Holy Spirit”) by Spanish explorers, and when you visit, you will soon understand the almost-religious appeal of the place.
After cruising the swamp for a while, you will have the opportunity to actually participate in an alligator handling show! You’ll then head to Miami for some shopping at the Bayside district, before boarding a Star Island Cruise vessel to take in the sights of the homes of the wealthier residents of “The Magic City”. The aptly-named Star Island is a manmade land mass created by Carl Fisher in 1922, and is home to just 22 residences (sorry, no new applications accepted) inhabited by the likes of Shaquille O’Neal, Lenny Kravitz, P. Diddy, Gloria Estefan, Will Smith, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, and good ol’ Sly Stallone…(is that him I see doing sit-ups in his living room?).
Your Floridian excursion will end with a trip to Miami’s South Beach for some tanning, swimming, and people-watching. From swamp-dwellers to A-Listers, Southern Florida really has it all!
