The Museum of Science and Industry is one of the coolest places to visit in the Tampa area, and its quirky personality and hip exterior make it one of the most exciting museums in the state. Mosey on down to MOSI for a few hours of static electricity, stars, tightropes, kid’s learning zones, butterflies, AND check out the only IMAX Dome Theater in the state of Florida. Note: The IMAX Theater is an additional fee and is paid directly at the museum.
What can you see at MOSI? This futuristic museum boasts 450 hands-on activities, including some very cool interactive and multi-sensory experiences. Here’s a look at a few of them:
Sunders Planetarium: This Orlando planetarium is a state-of-the-art stargazing facility, and is home to a projection dome and a super-high-tech projector (also known as the GOTO Space Simulator Chronos projection system). The powerful machine is capable of recreating the night sky from any time (past, present, or future) in less than 20 seconds from any geographical spot on the planet! The planetarium shows run at hourly intervals throughout the day, and your MOSI pass gives you free admission to one show!
Disasterville: Brave extreme weather conditions inside Disasterville (featuring Bay News 9 WeatherQuest), and see what really happens inside storms, twisters, and more!
The Amazing You: Explore the stages of life, from birth through adolescence, then on to mid-life and old age. Get a very real look at some serious medical conditions that affect humans and what their impact on the human body is, and learn about the sleep cycle and its importance for brain function!
MOSI Outside: Head out into the tropics in MOSI’s backyard, which houses awesome outdoor exhibits like the BioWorks Butterfly Garden (did you know the average raindrop weighs 70 milligrams, and the average butterfly weighs about 500 milligrams?), the Ropes Course, which features a 12-36 foot high multilevel climbing course (extra charge may apply), and the Back Woods Forest Preserve, a diminutive forest oasis located on 25 acres and featuring such ecosystems as wetlands, flatwoods, and hardwood hammocks.
Tampa’s Museum of Science and Industry is a great place to spend a morning or afternoon learning about science, and exploring unique sensations and experiences that we often take for granted. Located just around the corner from world-famous Busch Gardens, a trip to MOSI is a great indoor addition to a weekend visit to Tampa!
