Guided tours are extra
By S from Canada on

Comments about Smart Destinations La Jolla kayaking, biking, or snorkeling:

Just a note that when we called, they said they only had guided tour spots left and that's an up-sell. Since they're the same kayaks, I'm not sure why wouldn't have a non-guided version available. Seems like just a way to get more money. We paid for the upgrade and the guided tour was fine, staff was friendly and knowledgable. So no complaints about the experience itself, just surprised by having to pay extra, since every other place we did on the go card was 100% covered. Also, just a warning, sea kayaking is very different from lake kayaking. I got seasick, whereas normally on a lake I do not. We were not the only kayak to turn back early because of motion sickness out of a group of about 10.

Snorkeling disaster

Comments about Smart Destinations La Jolla kayaking, biking, or snorkeling:

We were so excited for our snorkeling tour amongst the stingrays and leopard sharks. We have 5 boys and this was one of the exciting adventures we promised them on our S. Cali run. What surely promised to be an adventure turned out to be a HUGE flop. The private beach we walked to was open ocean and the waves mixed up the water where you couldn't see a foot in front of your face. The waves also made it difficult to even snorkel at all. The private beach was home to dozens of little snorkelers in training. After our so called "tour", we grabbed the gear and drove around to a different beach in a secluded area called the Cove. Though we shared the area with a thousand other fellow vacationers, at least you could see a few fish. I'm sure there are times that conditions are such that this is an amazing experience. Just beware: you're not guaranteed to swim with the rays and sharks. You many not even see one...

We rented kayaks and had the best time. The staff was very helpful & friendly. We were provided with the maps, the best spots for viewing different types of aquatic life, and were on our way very quickly! The caves are beautiful and the water was so clear we were able to see lots of fish and sea lions! Loved this attraction!

We took the guided tour, Mitch was our guide and was great. We saw the caves along with fish and sealions. This was a fun experience we may not have done if it hadn't have been offered through the go card.
