Kids will love the Wergeland Family Discovery Center, which features giant green sea turtles and rainbow trout. In Turtle Lagoon, get up-close-and-personal with the Discovery Center’s own endangered Eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtles. Don't miss the David A. Wergeland Shark & Ray Experience, a 21,000-gallon aquarium that includes a shallow-water touch tank where you can actually touch the resident rays!

At the Living Coast Discovery Center, you can step into the Shorebird Aviary and enter the home of native water and shorebirds, including egrets, ducks, and herons. At Eagle Mesa, you will come face-to-face with the majestic national symbols of the United States and Mexico: the Bald eagle and Golden eagle. Take a walk down Raptor Row and meet the Discovery Center’s native birds of prey, including hawks, owls, osprey, and even the Turkey vulture.

As you’re exploring, take notice of the beautiful gardens featuring San Diego’s rich mosaic of plant species. Take a stroll on the Discovery Center’s 1.5 miles of walking trails leading to the shoreline, where you may catch a glimpse of a soaring harrier, shorebirds, rabbits, and maybe even an Osprey diving down for lunch.

It's been years since I visited as a child. Now as an adult, I find the Discovery Center a great place to bring my children. Though it is not the size of the SD Zoo, it is just big enough that my family really enjoyed their time and the little ones were tired when we left. I never realized how many animals are local to San Diego and you can see them up-close. I also liked the fact that we could pack a lunch and were allowed to bring food, though I didn't plan for it on this trip. Overall a great experience, and it didn't take up the entire day.

What a great place to see up-close native San Diego County wildlife! I wasn't even through the front door before I saw sea turtles swimming around on exhibit to my left. Once inside, there were numerous aquariums with fish and eels, jellies and sea stars all around. Passing by exhibits with snakes, lizards, and tortoises, I walked out the back to check out the sharks and rays, and even got to touch some of the rays in a touch pool. I felt as if I were in the middle of a wildlife preserve (and I was), walking through the open air aviary among ducks and egrets and other marsh birds before I got to the birds of prey. Eagles, hawks, owls, and a Peregrine falcon and more, there was just so much to see! I will definitely be back. Next time I hope to watch them feed the eagles!

Great for kids, we did this on the Go SD Card. You can also visit Knott's Soak CIty SD in the same day (it's right within a couple miles, so it's a good 1 day outing on your card
