Whale Watch by Flagship Cruises

In this 3.5 hour adventure, watch for majestic gray whales that often pass through local waters. Listen, too: whale and dolphin sounds play in real time, and a naturalist from the Birch Aquarium narrates the tour. And if there's no whale sighting, you ride again for free!

Join San Diego Harbor Excursions and the world-famous Birch Aquarium at Scripps for a California Gray Whale watching adventure and enjoy the natural beauty of one of America’s finest bays. A whale sighting is guaranteed — or else you ride again for free! Approximately 20,000 gray whales pass through San Diego’s waters in their 10,000-mile annual, epic migration from the Bering Sea to Baja California. Your 3.5-hour, fully-narrated adventure promises to deliver close-up views of the behemoth California Gray Whale. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, seals, sea lions, and migrating birds as well, but don’t get so caught up in the marine life sightings that you miss the spectacular views of San Diego Harbor!

In addition to the standard features of this whale watching cruise, Flagship Cruises now allows you to listen to whale and dolphin sounds in real time using state-of-the art research equipment from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography! Your first-rate tour will be narrated by a knowledgeable naturalist from the Birch Aquarium-- an offshoot of the world-renowned research center at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Passengers can choose indoor or outdoor seating, making for a comfortable journey regardless of weather and outdoor temperature (though in San Diego you won’t have to worry too much!). Before the cruise, you’ll also be given a handy fact sheet about the stunning marine mammals that can be seen in the waters around San Diego. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase during the journey.

Here’s a little information about the magnificent mammal that is the namesake of this Flagship Cruise:

Gray Whale: A dark, slate-gray colored baleen whale that can reach lengths of 52 feet and weights of up to 36 tons, with a lifespan of up to 70 years. The gray whale migrates annually through the Pacific waters off the coast of America and parts of Asia, at distances of up to 10,000 miles in a given migratory pattern. Gray whales feed mostly on crustaceans and sediment on the ocean floor which they filter through their “baleen” (‘whalebone’).

Take this unique opportunity to see one of the finest examples of marine life off the Pacific Coast in its natural habitat and thriving in waters that were once hostile and filled with whale-hunters. San Diego now boasts a rich legacy of conservation and marine research, and there is no better place to behold this wonderful natural spectacle!
