At the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, lions lounge in the grasslands while rhinos and antelopes cool off in a nearby watering hole. You can see the best of African wildlife on this memorable safari adventure in a park that's home to more than 3,500 animals representing 429 species!
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a wildlife preserve that mimics the natural habitats of African and Asian animals. Its 33,000-square-foot Lion Camp even provides guests an opportunity to experience a face-to-face encounter with lions!
No need to go all the way to Africa to experience a safari—San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers a very realistic mini-safari excursion that lets you take in all the splendors of the savannah! Step foot inside the park's 1,800 acres and climb aboard the Africa Tram Safari for a quick trip around the park.
Board one of the park’s trams and hit the trails to get up-close and personal with African wildlife in a way that would only be possible in Africa! Your guide will spend time pointing out the various animals and habitats you’re seeing, letting you know how it stacks up to what you might see in the wild.
You will cruise the park’s large exhibits and gaze upon herds of curious giraffes, Cape buffalo, ostriches, African cranes, giant rhinos, gazelles, and horned antelope as they strut across their grasslands habitats. Africa Tram Safari at San Diego Zoo does a great job of condensing the cultures and landscapes of Africa into a micro-experience that will give you a taste of the real thing.
You’ll get an up-close look at exactly how large these animals are and observe some of their more unique behaviors as seen in the wild. Visit the otherwise inaccessible areas of the park from the comfort of your breezy, open-air tram and watch as herds of antelopes prance alongside the vehicle, just as curious about you as you are about them.
Upon returning to “basecamp”, finish off your day meandering through the rest of the zoo’s stunning habitats and paying a visit to the other mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds that call the world-famous San Diego Zoo Safari Park home! You will go home with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of the African Savanna.

The best way to see it would be to arrive at 3 when the park is emptying out, otherwise the lines are RIDICULOUS! We are talking an hour to enter, two hours to do a tram or two hours to see the butterflies! But of course for a fee you can skip those lines. It is a bunch of shopping areas with the occasional viewing area for an animal. It COSTS WAY MORE THAN A ZOO, but isn't any better than one, and all the cool stuff costs extra. And not just a few dollars more but more than the cost of entry for each thing. (like the zip line, the hot air ballon ride, or any of the safari tour rides). And it is huge! 9 times bigger than San Diego Zoo but with not much more to see. Just a lot of walking. The tram ride that is included takes a 35 min walk to get to, and then you have to wait in line, for two hours.

LOVE this park! It's so interesting and beautiful. There are so many natural animal interactions and you don't get the feeling that the animals are caged up. Having been to many zoos and also safari in South Africa, I can say this is the closet thing to the real deal ... Also I love that it's not as crowded as traditional theme parks, great prices, and fun for all ages.
