The USS Midway aircraft carrier, 972 feet and 74,000 tons of military muscle, has become a mainstay of San Diego, and is absolutely worth the trip for the whole family. Located at the city’s Navy Pier, this museum takes guests back in time aboard the 20th century’s longest-serving aircraft carrier. Get a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of the 225,000 sailors that served aboard this “city at sea” from 1945 to 1992, in places as far away as the South China Sea.

Visitors can tour 60 exhibits, to include the USS Midway’s sleeping quarters, the ship’s jail, and the flight control deck, before heading to one of three exciting flight simulators aboard this CV-41 aircraft carrier. The Midway Aircraft Museum’s “Air Wing” boasts a collection of 25 meticulously restored aircraft, including the F/A-18 Hornet and F9F-Panther, which have been flown in times of conflict ranging from World War II to Desert Storm, as well as on humanitarian missions. Aeronautical buffs of any age can climb aboard several of these aircraft to check out the cockpits and controls and imagine what it would have been like to fly in the pilot’s seat. Don’t leave the carrier without getting a bite to eat at Fantail Café, which features meals made from the ship’s original 1945 menu!

Self-guided audio tours are available in English, Spanish, and Japanese, and the museum is staffed by 60 well-informed docents, as well as retired World War II pilots, who are available to provide little-known trivia and facts about this impressive aircraft carrier. The Midway staff prides itself on its dedication to making sure this aircraft carrier is 100% handicapped accessible, with ramps, elevators, and loaner wheelchairs.

Veterans, take note- Midway’s staff members are interested in preserving history and need participants to help. The USS Midway Museum is currently undertaking a “Veterans Oral History Program” in conjunction with the Library of Congress, in which those who have served can apply to tell their own personal stories aboard the ship in a recording studio, to possibly be featured in future exhibits.

The USS Midway is one of San Diego’s most unique tourist destinations. This floating museum offers visitors a phenomenal way to spend a sunny afternoon on the water while learning important historical lessons from, and paying tribute to, the men and women who have courageously served in some of the nation’s most pivotal conflicts.

This was definitely highlight of our San Diego trip. There is so much history aboard this vessel. We also were priviledged to meet a WWII veteran who was giving talks that day.

My entire family loved visiting the USS Midway. Throughout the ship there are retired military members that are friendly and informative about the history of the ship. I definitely plan on visiting again. We were there for four hours and could have spent the whole day exploring the ship.

The USS Midway is another site I would like to spend more time in touring on another trip to San Diego. It is so huge, you cannot compete the tour in its entirety in less than 4 hours.

Comments about Smart Destinations Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum:

My husband didn't want to spend more than 2 hours here but was AMAZED once we got on board. We spent the whole day here. It really is an AWESOME experience. We left there appreciating the military more. We spoke to several retired MIDWAY SAILORS while there. They shared stories of their experiences while on board & answered questions. Parking is a separate charge. Pay attention to the length of time you purchase & the time you spend on board. You may end up with a $35 or $40 ticket if you underestimate your stay. I ran out before our 4 hour time was up to purchase an additional 4 hour parking pass & paid more. A visit to the USS Midway should be a PRIORITY! I enjoyed this more than all of popular children attractions in California.

Comments about Smart Destinations Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum:

Our entire family really enjoyed this tour. We spent more time here than we had expected and missed the tour of the "bridge" because it was getting late. I would take the tour first and work your way down the ship. Very fascinating with lots of on site experts to answer your questions and give real life experiences. We met 2 pearl harbor surviors who were scheduled speakers. Excellent!
