San Francisco is a vibrant city with many beautiful assets, and perhaps its most important asset is its sea coast. Take the opportunity to learn about the marine life in this part of the state and take a trip to the Aquarium of the Bay! The aquarium brings you through three diverse environments that show off the riches beneath the surface of the San Francisco Bay and the surrounding areas, with naturalists on-hand to answer your questions. Here’s a look at the layout of Aquarium of the Bay and what you can expect to see on your visit:

Discover the Bay: You’ll begin here with an introduction to the unique ecosystems that support the area’s marine life. Eight exhibits make up this gallery, featuring over a thousand aquatic animals native to the San Francisco Bay.

Under the Bay: Descend into the hidden world beneath San Francisco Bay, via a world of pulsating and graceful Moon Jellies and Pacific Sea Nettles. Next, you’ll walk through to the first of two crystal clear tunnels, 300 feet in length, completely surrounded by 700,000 gallons of Bay water and over 20,000 animals! This is a truly captivating gallery that lets you literally walk through the world of the creatures you’re discovering in their natural environments. The first tunnel contains swirling schools of anchovies, giant sea bass, and vibrant sea stars. In the second tunnel, you’ll see the marine life that thrives in the deeper waters of the Bay, including massive Sevengill sharks and giant skates.

Touch the Bay: Emerging from your underwater tunnel experience, you’ll enter this final gallery, which is home to PG&E Bay Lab, an interactive exhibit that features land animals that represent their various habitats and remind visitors of the dangers of climate change. You’ll have the opportunity to touch California king snakes, and marine animals such as leopard sharks and bat rays! Visitors will also be able to participate in interactive experiments, learn how solar power works, and send e-cards to friends back home!

Aquarium of the Bay is a nonprofit marine center, dedicated to revitalizing the ecosystems of the San Francisco Bay area. Learn about the conservation efforts of this institution on your visit! Also be sure to check out the efforts undertaken by the Aquarium of the Bay to promote an understanding of various shark species that are native to the area’s waters.

Comments about Smart Destinations Aquarium of the Bay:

This was a really neat place to visit. Not to mention where the aquarium is located is in a prime spot next to places to eat and shop. Although the aquarium is located in a "hot spot" it was not stuffy inside. There was room to move around and really soak up the information that was presented on the labels they did have. I got to pet a shark! That was really cool! You also get to touch sting rays, but that was nothing knew to us we have gotten a chance to pet those before at other aquariums. Neat for people who have never petted either fish before.

Comments about Smart Destinations Aquarium of the Bay:

We loved this place. Just wish they had more labels for each fish in the tank. I had to ask a worker what a slug thing was (sea cucumber). It was totally awesome for the kids who didn't care as much what things were. There was lots to see and we'll worth taking time to explore.
