Explore the fascinating history of cartoon art at the Cartoon Art Museum, one of the only museums in the United States dedicated to the preservation, documentation, and exhibition of cartoons in all their forms.

Founded in 1984 with the help of an endowment from Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, the Cartoon Art Museum houses over 6,000 original pieces by some of the most renowned and creative cartoonists of the 20th century.

The Cartoon Art Museum presents permanent and changing exhibits every year that trace the evolution of this unique and accessible art form, including animation, comic strips, comic books, editorial and magazine cartoons, and underground comics. Cartoons are serious art, and the Cartoon Art Museum is serious fun.

The Cartoon Art Museum exhibits pieces that represent the history, contemporary development, creators, design, and processes underlying the art forms of cartoons, comics, digital animation, illustration, and videogames.

The Cartoon Art Museum presents exhibitions such as:

Love and Rockets: a 30th Anniversary Celebration: an exhibit celebrating Love and Rockets, a black-and-white magazine featuring stories and art by the brothers Jaime, Gilbert and Mario Hernandez, a.k.a. Los Bros. Hernandez.

Sketchtravel: a unique collaborative project bringing together 71 talented artists from around the world.

Art of Paranorman: The Cartoon Art Museum proudly presents original works of art from the feature film ParaNorman, produced by LAIKA, the Portland-based animation studio owned by Nike co-founder and Chairman Philip H. Knight, and released nationwide by Focus Features on August 17, 2012.

Comments about Smart Destinations Cartoon Art Museum:

This place is small and you'll probably only spend about 30-40 minutes here tops, but if you are in to comics (past & present) this is not to be missed. When I visited the place was not busy and that's a shame because it's a diamond museum hidden amongst flashier ones nearby (SFMOMA, etc.). There was cartoon artwork of all kinds. Kids will love the Pixar animation, "regular folk" will like the old-fashioned cartoons of their youth, while more hardcore comic-con types will appreciate the graphic novels, Marvel, and more. Not just for geeks!
