When in San Francisco, you don’t want to miss touring the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien.

Located on Pier 45 in scenic Fisherman’s Wharf, the Jeremiah O’Brien is a National Treasure. There are only two surviving WWII Liberty Ships in the world, and the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien is the only one in its original WWII configuration.

Why is touring the ship a living history lesson? Because she is a D-Day veteran. The ship made 11 trips between England and Omaha Beach that fateful month of June, 1944. In 1994, the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien sailed back to Normandy under her own steam for the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Of the original 5,000 ship armada that participated in the D-Day invasion, the ship was the only one to make it back for the 50th anniversary celebration.

While on board, explore the engine room (the location of all the engine room scenes in the movie Titanic); the Flying Bridge; the 5 gun tubs; the museum (with its huge D-Day diorama given to the ship by the French people in gratitude for helping liberate them); and the ship store. But most of all, simply soak in the historical monument that is the S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien.

Named the National Liberty Ship Memorial, S.S. Jeremiah O’Brien is still fully operational, so take some time to observe the crew and their daily business. Walk through the living quarters of the ship and see how the current crew members live on the ship. Just next door, you’ll find cabins that have been preserved in their original state. See the crew of the JEREMIAH O’BRIEN at work in the engine room and on other parts of the ship. Look at the pinups painted at the bow of the ship that have been restored to their full glory. This isn’t like any ordinary naval ship museum; you actually have the option of learning about life on a military boat by observing it first hand.

If you want to take a break from your tour, take a break on the deck and absorb the breathtaking views of the San Francisco bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.

The tours on the ship are self-guided, so there is no pressure to rush to catch a tour or to see a part of the ship you’re not interested in. See what you want when you want to and be an eyewitness to history.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit

Comments about Smart Destinations S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien:

My husband and I visited this ship in 2011. We arrived when there was no line and we got a personal tour from a very agile and enthusiastic volunteer who was over 80 years old! We went all over the ship, got to touch things, ask all the questions we wanted, etc. It was fun and educational. If you are not fairly able-bodied you will be limited as to where you can go as this is a real ship with ladders, small doors, and narrow walkways. Two years out, I remember this tour much better than the other 2 cruise boat tours we took.
