How does a Washington DC Explorer Pass work?
  • Purchase a pass for the number of attractions you want to visit — we offer 3 or 5-Choice Passes.

My friend and I used the DC Explorer Pass for 5 attractions. I was skeptical at first, but we got to see and do so many things we would not have otherwise if we hadn't gone with the pass. The bus tour helped us see all the monuments in one go, the Newseum blew me away, and we rented bikes to cycle all the way to Mt. Vernon (worth it if you don't mind 4 hours round trip).

Great way to explore DC

We chose 3 places to explore. By far the best place to visit is NEWSEUM. we were given a second day pass for free. WOW. Mount Vernon was our second choice. A full day of exploration ! We had a car rental , so we were able to visit the distillery. Well worth our time there. The boat ride on the Potomac was just okay. They picked up passengers in Alexandria, but we weren't allowed to get the boat there... we had to board in Georgetown. If you use public transportation, you're better off. we had a handicapped parking placard and didn't have to pay for street parking. Parking in a lot or garage is very expensive ! The weather was great and we were able to enjoy all the sights.

Not worth it at all!!

Comments about Smart Destinations Washington DC Explorer Pass®:

The Potomac Riverboat Cruise was 2.5 hours of misery. Not good views of any of the monuments. Boats were dirty and cold and leaky. Staff was not very nice either. Hop on and off bus was ok but again some of the staff acted as if you were boarding Air Force One and couldn't be bothered. Spy museum was a bore. Newseum was the only thing worth going to and it would have been significantly cheaper to do separate. Would NOT waste my time with this again!!

Smart Destinations Response: Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We have passed along your feedback about the customer service at attractions and might recommend the Build Your Own Pass next time.

Comments about Smart Destinations Washington DC Explorer Pass®:

On a recent trip to DC we did enjoy but ..The capital wheel was much farther than I imagined it cost us $30.00 dollars for a cab to get to it…The wax museum was kinda boring, amazing wax figures but zzzzz and the city tour the microphone kept on dying on the staff, the staff was very nice and friendly on the tour but the fact you couldn't hear them sometimes was upsetting but the staff seemed like this happened a lot

Unsure that the Pass was a deal for us
By Thrifty Mama from PIttsburgh, PA on
Pros:
User-friendly system, Must-see attractions included
Best Uses:

Comments about Smart Destinations Washington DC Explorer Pass®:

The DC Explorer Pass sounded like a good deal for my family of six. However, we traveled in the off season and many of the attractions and museums closed early. We were only able to use two of the three activities on our pass on our trip. It would have been nice if the pass lasted longer than 30 days so that we could have made another trip to use up the pass. (we live over 4 hrs away) It did not prove to be a deal for us this time.

Smart Destinations Response: Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to leave this helpful review. We are sorry to hear you did not get the full benefit of the pass in DC. We are always striving to improve so please email customerservice@smartdestinations.com if you are planning a trip to D.C or any of our other markets in the future- we would love the chance to help you get the most out of using the passes on your next trip!
