The USS Midway aircraft carrier, 972 feet and 74,000 tons of military muscle, has become a mainstay of San Diego, and is absolutely worth the trip for the whole family. Located at the city’s Navy Pier, this museum takes guests back in time aboard the 20th century’s longest-serving aircraft carrier. Get a glimpse into the day-to-day lives of the 225,000 sailors that served aboard this “city at sea” from 1945 to 1992, in places as far away as the South China Sea.
Visitors can tour 60 exhibits, to include the USS Midway’s sleeping quarters, the ship’s jail, and the flight control deck, before heading to one of three exciting flight simulators aboard this CV-41 aircraft carrier. The Midway Aircraft Museum’s “Air Wing” boasts a collection of 29 meticulously restored aircraft, including the F/A-18 Hornet and F9F-Panther, which have been flown in times of conflict ranging from World War II to Desert Storm, as well as on humanitarian missions. Aeronautical buffs of any age can climb aboard several of these aircraft to check out the cockpits and controls and imagine what it would have been like to fly in the pilot’s seat. Don’t leave the carrier without getting a bite to eat at Fantail Café, which features meals made from the ship’s original 1945 menu!
Self-guided audio tours of the USS Midway are available in English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Japanese. The museum is staffed by well-informed docents, as well as retired World War II pilots who are available to provide little-known trivia and facts about this impressive aircraft carriers. The Midway staff prides itself on its dedication to making sure the aircraft carrier is handicapped accessible, with ramps, elevators, and loaner wheelchairs.
Battle of Midway Theater is Now Open! A 90-seat theater now open aboard Midway, featuring a riveting 15-minute multimedia movie about the Battle of Midway: Voices of Midway. Narrated by a hologram figure of a young sailor telling his story about the historic battle, you won’t want to miss this inspirational experience, included with admission!
