The Contemporary Jewish Museum (The CJM) is a lively center where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather to experience art, share diverse perspectives, and engage in interactive activities. Located in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena arts district, The CJM is one of the city’s most iconic structures built in recent years.

Designed by internationally renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, the new building CJM opened its doors in 2008 and has since established itself as a hub of contemporary art, history, and perspectives on the Jewish culture. The structure now protrudes in a geometric shape, something like a geode made of soaring blue steel. It fascinates every passerby.

With ever-changing exhibits, The CJM is considered to be a non-collecting institute. They source all different mediums of art, demonstrations, and performances from a variety of national and international artists that are all timely and relevant with the day and age. With each innovative and easy-to-understand exhibit, The CJM aims to connect the 21st-century audience with the authentic Jewish experience.

Peruse the halls of modern and contemporary pieces and discover the rich history of this beautiful culture.

The Contemporary Jewish Museum Highlights
Past and present exhibitions at The CJM include

  • Veiled Meanings: Fashioning Jewish Dress, from the collection of the Israel Museum: to what extent is our choice of dress our own? Explore this concept through a display of traditional Jewish clothing and jewelry pieces and see how history has shaped style.
  • In That Case: Havruta in Contemporary Art – Oxossi Ayofemi and Risa Weschler: artist Oxossi Ayofemi and havurta partner and Stanford physicist Risa Weschler come together to infuse the concept of dark matter and energy with the notions of power, blackness, economy, and Utopian image.
  • What We Hold: Youth Voices on Roots and What Matters Most: discover what shapes us and what shapes our core values. What pieces of us are formed from our heritage and humble beginnings?

Please note, The CJM’s exhibits are constantly rotating throughout the year. For more information on current and upcoming exhibitions, please consult The CJM’s website.
